“Pros and Cons of A-Train Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2013

Pros:
1. Quirky is definitely the word to describe this place. Full of train themed items and decor. If your into all that stuff, you would be in heaven here.
2. Liked all the railway seats and things in the breakfast area. Breakfast itself was dutch, no fried or cooked food, all ham/cheese/cereal etc.
3. Staff were very friendly, turned up asking for a room and they were able to accommodate, speak English very well, enjoyed talking to the breakfast lady, All appear very proud of their hotel, good to see.
4. Room/bathroom was clean, beds were comfortable.
5. TV good, bathroom good.
6. WIFI throughout the hotel, good connection.
7. Close to the main train station/centre of Amsterdam, able to walk into all the main areas, whilst just not too close that it was noisy/busy.

Cons:
1. Originally got given a bigger room than we paid for, agreed to move to our normal room after one night. This was a twin bed room. Was very small. a few meters by a few meters. The bigger one was a lot nicer, much more spacious. This was bordering on claustrophobic.

Didn't really have any other issues, the hotel was fine.

Overall:
If your looking a nice B&B/Guesthouse type experience, it's not a bad place to go. Wouldn't expect anything too fancy, but it does the job for a room and bed to sleep in.
Personally wouldn't stay anything over a few days. Mostly for travelers/few couples, didn't see any families or children.

Room Tip: Ensure you get the bigger room if you are booking twin beds. The standard twin rooms are like a box.

Nobody mentioned the trains, (well the reviews I checked out). But it's got a definite railway theme.
From the old carriage seats in the small lobby, through to all the railwayana and train photos on and around the walls (including the bedrooms). It was lovely, because you stay in so many identical hotels, with the same old laminate finish, and glitzy, corporate style.
The bedroom was small, but easily big enough for two - but don't expect to languish there, sipping a drink and watching TV (it had one). Basically it's a bedroom. The beds however were a tad soft, for my liking, but I do like a firm bed. The bathroom was functional, with a walk in wetroom/shower, with a powerful and always hot shower. I'd have liked better illumination, - the single lamp, didn't provide enough light to easily shave.
Breakfast was basic buffet - nothing hot, just cereals, croissants, bread selection (there was a toaster), recently boiled eggs, Dutch cheese, processed ham, tomatoes, etc. You wouldn't leave hungry - I had cheese, ham and tomato sandwiches! Hot drinks were from a (good) machine, juices from a dispenser.
The staff were superb. Really helpful and friendly, always a genuine smile.
Overall a good base, if you want to be near Centraal Station and downtown Amsterdam. It's a little bit tired a dog eared in places, but I'd use it again.

Room Tip: I was at the back so I don't know, but rooms at the front of the hotel may be noisy, The hotel i...

We were a family of four adults - arriving into Amsterdam airport late in the evening and we wanted somewhere that we could get to cheaply and safely. This hotel is a great choice - only across the road from the train station. You get the trains under neath the hotel and they come a minimum of 3 times every hour. Its around 4 euro one way and you can buy the tickets at counters - the machines we have been told are quite complicated. its takes approx 17 minutes. We found this ideal. The hotel rooms are small - we had a family room - a double bed downstairs and two beds upstairs in a 'loft/attic' area. The stairs up to this area are quite steep but there is a stair gate in case small children are staying. There are also some toys - which we didnt need! The staff in the hotel are extremely friendly - especially the lady who looks after the breakfast area. The reception staff answered all our questions with a smile and we found the hotel to be clean - if somewhat a little old. The choice for breakfast is a little limited but there is no need to go away hungry.

Room Tip: Rooms are a little small - we had a lift to the second floor - some of the others might not be as ea...

my wife and I stayed for 3 days from 16th November (birthday present for my wife). this hotel (as the name suggests) has a railway theme. breakfast room and bedrooms are adorned with railway memorabilia. The staff in this hotel could not have been more helpful, breakfast is continental style which is included in the price.(most hotels charge extra) we were on the 4th floor which was not a problem as there is a lift. we booked a first class room which was spotlessly clean and had tea and coffee making, hair dryer, fridge and flat screen tv. the hotel itself is only 5 minutes walk from central station. we have been to Amsterdam every year for the last 10 years and I would say that this hotel is one of the best for location and value for money,(€330.00) for 3 nights, would definitely stay here again

Room Tip: choose a higher floor room at the back of the hotel if you want less street noise (this did not both...
