Owner description: The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

I took out children, aged 6 and 8 to the Mix, Max Brazil exhibition. There are lots of hands-on activities to do and at 14:30 during the weekends and holiday times there is a workshop on Brazilian music and dancing.
Adults are not allowed during that hour, so I looked around the museum and went back for the 'performance' an hour later.
I would highly recommend it, best to phone and book your children for the workshop so as not to disappoint.
There is free admission with a Yearly Museum Card.

This is by far one of my favourite museums in Amsterdam. The collection and way how they present it is impeccable. You immediately feel like you're inside a different world. Situated in such a grand, classical building, it's a great journey for all ages. Every nook and cranny is used to provide a highly interactive experience. Great information and attention to detail, distinctive areas for every part of the world, very nice staff and fascinating temporary exhibitions.

I can highly recommend this museum if you're planning to visit it with children and wanting to introduce them to different cultures. Their ongoing interactive exhibition MixMax Brasil made me wish I was a child again; a surreal Brasilian world is created in an almost hidden adjacent room of the museum, where children enjoy in a playful and educative way the colourful live of Brazil.

The museum is a real gem! Beautiful pieces, artfully done and very, very nteresting.
We loved the part with the different musical instruments, where you can sit down and listen to each of them!
I am an Indinesian and can therefore highly appreciate the part from Indonesia. Beautiful pieces that they have there.
And if you are interested to buy ethnical things, the museum shop is worth going to!!!

We visited for several hours on an eight day trip. It is worth your time to find it and has some neat stuff, particularly from the Dutch East Indies and New Guinea. It is a big classic building and contains lots of exhibits. There was a fair bit of political correctness and the contemporary, temporary exhibit was useless. There is some other stuff in here that seems to be out of place. If you have the museumkart it is worth around two hours of your time. There are better sites in Amsterdam so I am not giving it more than three stars.

A most wonderful museum ... I specifically went for the part on the Dutch East Indies, which was presented in a very professional way. The museum staff are wonderfully helpful and thoughtful and even stored my umbrella which was too long for the lockers which they provide. We were very impressed with the museum and staff as a whole and would certainly return to spend an entire day to see more of the displays for which, this time, we did not have the opportunity. The DEI section is wonderful.
