I'm used to the great Zoo in Lisbon, but this one, despite being smaller, is still good. We loved the trip. 2 hours is enough to see it.

This is a very large zoo, and has it's own Aquarium as well. We spent the whole day here.
They did have a couple of areas closed for refurbishment but there was still plenty to see.
I highly recommend hanging around the Lemur area, having them jump overhead and walk around you is great fun!

The food is traditional Dutch junk food & salads, so plan accordingly.

I went with a 4 year old and 1 year old and we spent a lovely afternoon. The animals are all healthy and in fairly open enclosures and you can see them at close quarters. It's also not a very extensive zoo which makes it just right for younger kids. My 4 year old loved the sea lions (we watched the zookeeper make them do tricks), the butterfly garden, giraffes, llamas and elephants. The lions were pretty impressive too and quite surprisingly not caged in. the zookeeper talks are in Dutch only though, so we couldnt follow what he was saying but we enjoyed all the things he made the animals do. There's also a slide in the shape of a giraffe which my daughter loved - what a lovely idea for a slide. Usually the zoo is open till 6 p, but on Saturdays in June, July, Aug, the zoo is open till sunset (which is like 9 pm) and you are allowed to make a picnic on the grass - wish we had known this. There's also a planetarium with several shows (no extra charge) - it's all in Dutch, no english shows, but my child likes "being in space" and didn't care too much about the commentary. the shows are about 25 minutes long, we went for the one called "Spacetrip" which seemed to be a general show about the universe, stars and planets. We ate at the planetarium cafe which offers soup, sandwiches (incl. vegetarian options), juices and coffee. You are also allowed to bring your own food in - there is a microwave in the cafe to warm up food and baby milk which was very handy.

... but worth a visit. A lot of different animals; very interesting, also for children. Unfortunately, some areas were inaccessible due to work, perhaps they're further improving!
Entrance costs almost 20 € per person (children under 12 years free)
