“We loved it!”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

First time we visited. Shame on us. It's great! This time there's a superb exhibition "from the Guggenheim collection to the Cobra Museum Amstelveen". Splendid, colourful, refreshing. We spend about 1.5 hours there and did not see time passing. We loved it! The museum is within easy reach from downtown AMS with tram nr 5. Although photos cannot do justice to paintings, enclosed are some snapshots. To give u some idea. Enjoy!!

“surprising”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

On a rainy day in June visiting this museum was great. Good parking facilities in the nearby modern and relaxed shopping centre. In combination with the Gugenheim Collection wel worth the money. Very friendly staff. Is was also great to see some of the faumous dutch Cobra-painters

“Wonderful museum, terrible service in cafe”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

We visited the Cobra museum on Sunday 11th may. We arrived at 2 pm, and thought we would have ample time, since the museum closes at 5. There was a shortage of lockers, as the current visiting exhibition is Solomon R. Guggenheim's International Abstraction: 1949-1960, a very varied and exciting show, adding to the wonderful permanent collection of the Cobra group. Visitors had to wait for lockers to be vacated. When we had spent nearly 2 hours looking at the Guggenheim show, we went downstairs for a quick cup of coffee and a sandwich/snack. There were at least 3 waiters in view, but one did not have his notepad, and the others did not want to attend their colleague's customers. It took 40 minutes to get served with a sandwich that did not match its description in the menu (doorstep sandwich with no butter, or other spread, no tomatoes, no rocket), and a cup of coffee. Many people complained. We should have left, as we now had only 25-30 minutes to see the rest of the museum, and had no time for the shop. The experience soured an otherwise delightful visit. Do try and catch this inspiring exhibition, just go next door to the Bijenkorf, or one of the nearby coffee shops for your refreshment.

“Don't tell anyone...”
Reviewed 16 May 2014 via mobile

This is easily the best, and least known, gallery in Amsterdam. A bit of a trek but worth it for the main collection and the visiting exhibitions. Cannot recommend it too much!

“The second best modern art museum from Netherlands”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

COBRA is considered the second best Museum from the Netherlands, after the Stedelijk, from Amsterdam.

Actually, it is located in Amstelveen, where I live, which is a different municipality from Amsterdam. It has a beautiful building, worth a visit as well for its modern architecture. The name COBRA stand for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, referring to the home cities from the 6 artists that started the Cobra movement in 1948.Other artists, poets and writers join the founders and over the years the artists Karel Appel, Constant and Corneille became very well known. Many of their works are part of the permanent collection from the Museum.

They were guided for the interest to have total freedom in their creativity and inspired by children's drawings and primitive art, experimenting with visual arts, ceramic, sculpture and even textile.

I visited the Museum with a friend to see the current exhibition which is about the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. I like his work better than most of the permanent collection. It is very colourful and reinforce no use of straight lines.

The Museum stabilised a Hundertwasser study, where kids can draw and explore the artist working style. Great idea!(see picture)
