This a great hostel to stay at. There were four of us staying in a four bedroom room. Amazing value for money... had own bathroom and shower. The staff were very friendly, especially Sally. I Would definitely recommend this hostel and I will 100% stay there in the future.

I've stayed here on a few occasions and had a great time each time. They have well laid-out common areas (with a bar) that are great for meeting new people and relaxing. The rooms are very basic...and can get scummy, even though they are cleaned every day. Each bed has a lamp and a plug and room to store your belongings and lock them up. They have public computers for free use and free wifi. A nice touch is a collection of umbrellas by the exit...just in case it's raining. This is quite a decent-sized hostel and is definitely a party hostel. I find it welcoming and comfortable and would recommend it if certain other hostels were full.

Our first mistake was not realising that this is a 'smoking' hostel. We have no problem with 'smoking' we just wish we had known this before booking so we didn't have to encounter the smell of it everywhere in the Hostel.

We stayed in a private room with a private bathroom. It was small, old and not very clean. Alot of mould in the bathroom and it flooded when you turned the shower on.

Breakfast was shocking. Stale bread, cereal and fruit but there was a sign saying 1 piece each only. We only had the breakfast on the first day and then catered for ourselves after that.

The location is very good. Right in the centre of the city, in the main paved street of Amsterdam.

On the last night we discovered a mouse in our room which was eating holes in our clothes and bags. At 2am we decided to go to reception to mention this the staff and after waiting 15 minutes for the staff member on duty to stop dancing with the other guests in the smoking room we gave up and tryed to get some sleep. We left the hostel at first light the next morning.

I wouldn't recommend this hostel to anyone.

First of all, a bit of friendly advice about getting to the Flying Pig Downtown hostel. Step 1, as you exit the Schipol airport, DO NOT accept a lift from any Albanian looking guys skulking around looking for tourists to offer taxis to (if you’ve seen Taken, you’ll understand haha). Step 2, although the minibus to the right on the exit is alot safer to get to the hostel, it costs 10€ more than the other way. Step 3, walk back inside the airport and get a train ticket to Amsterdam Central, it’ll cost you 4€ and is a 5minute walk down to the hostel.

Now, after our pretty horrific first glimpse of Amsterdam (in the form of an attempted “Taken” moment), we arrived at the hostel just after lunch where we were greeted with massive smiles and really friendly staff. They explained to us about the hostel and card keys, then gave us a little map with hotspots and ideas for things to do. Gave us breakfast times too, we took advantage of the free brekkie once, bread, coco pops (BEAUTIFUL!) and coffee/orange juice.

The room was quite a nice size, we originally booked for 4 but 1 person dropped out, so we had 2 bunk beds, each with a locker underneath where you can stick all your luggage. The view wasn’t great, but we weren’t in Amsterdam to sit in our room. The room we stayed in had a separate toilet and shower. Toilet was small, but sufficed. The shower room was great, just had to play around with the taps to make sure the hot water actually came on, you’ll figure it out near enough straight away, we were just quite drunk when we attempted to use it.

We had our room cleaned at about 1030 on the one day we stayed in 'til 11. The 1st guy who did the hoovering was pretty angry, but we did drop crisps on the floor. The next few girls that came in were cool and even sang along to our iPod songs.

The bar is great, really cheap drinks and great service. Order some Jagerbombs and you’ll have the attention of the room as they ring a bell for you, bloody delicious! Playing loads of different music, including Capdown (who are our local band back in Milton Keynes) and lot’s of party starting music. We didn’t use the smoking room, but it did look mighty comfortable! Also, there is free wifi in the bar, just ask them for the password and BAM, internet.

When you leave the hostel, be sure to visit the Blues Brothers coffeeshop across the road, the first bar on the corner towards Dam Square and Durty Nelly’s bar (best burger in Amsterdam).

Overall, an excellent hostel, and we are definitely coming back next year. I couldn’t recommend this hotel enough, be sure to get the map, we got so much use out of it!

Filthy, unsafe, loud... just terrible. Doors to the smoking room were always open, so the whole place smelled like pot all the time. Toilets and showers were downright disgusting. Breakfast was not much better: always something missing, never any clean plates or cutlery, etc. Would not recommend it to anyone! Worst of all, it's not even that cheap. Pay just a bit more and find yourself a better hostel (e.g. of the Stayokay chain) or a nice B&B.
