I've stayed at a few hostels around Europe and this has to be by far one of the best.
If you're arriving by train/bus the hostel is 5minutes away from the station.
We arrived at 10am and was able to check in and go to our room straight away. We're not fussy about rooms so we stayed in the cheaper option of 32 bed dorm, the good thing is the 32 bed rooms are actually split up to only around 8beds in a room (free ear plugs available from reception) with adequate toilet and shower facilities on all levels of the hostel. Fresh clean bedding is included, if you forget your towel you can rent one for a 2€ deposit.

Breakfast is also included, only continental with cereal, toast, fruit and boiled eggs, but sufficient.

Bar is open all day and until the early hours, definitely THE cheapest place to drink in amsterdam: Local lager 2bottles for 3€ until 9pm. Malibu, Absolut vodka and other "premium" spirits, in large measures, 2 for 6€ all day and night.

For those of you wanting to smoke amsterdams "specialties" there's also a smoking room for this off the bar, and an outside terrace.

When it comes to leaving, check out it 1030am, There are lockers that you can use however for 2€ to keep bags and belongings safe if you're not leaving Amsterdam until late on.

Overall possibly the best hostel i've stayed in and would not hesitate in booking it again during my next visit to Amsterdam

Room Tip: If going with group of friends, email hostel in advance to guarantee you get the same room

Real good vibes. Near to the central square "Dam square" and the red light district. Good panflets of what to do in the lobby, some of the staff doesn;t really know that much about the city, we asked one of them if there would be a line to go into the anne frank museum, she said no, and we had to wait 1 hour in line to get in, instead of buying them online without waiting in line.
You meet a lot of interesting people, there's a pool table in the lobby, and best of all "The smoking room" which is better to experience than to explain. The rooms are spacious, the bathroom aswell, and the beds comfortable.
Its definitely in the top 5 hostels to go in amsterdam if you're with your friends doing a eurotrip

3 nights to kick start our 5 week Europe interrail trip in Jul 2011.

The Flying Pig downtown could not be better located for what we were after (a rest place right in the centre of Amsterdam close to bars, cafes, sites etc). The hostel itself could not be much more characteristic-full with the old wooden turnstile to walkthrough as you enter. The haze of smoke filled the room the moment you walked through the door. For a first-timer to Amsterdam, the personalities surrounding me were rather daunting and you could not help but remind yourself of the cliches that come with being a regular drug user!

Regular drug user, I was/am not, and despite this my stay was fantastic. The hostel gave us a unique experience, from the people (including the rude nocternal couple in the bunk beneath us who did nothing but use their laptop and the famous footballer who was due to sign for Bolton) to the reasonable breakfast being offered.

This may be a random review but our stay in Amsterdam was exactly that. In the morning you'd be queuing up to see Anne Frank's house, and in the afternoon you'd be in a coffee shop doing anything else but drinking coffee.

The Flying Pig definitely helped to make this experience an absolutely brilliant start. It misses out on a 5 due to the perhaps slight "dinginess" of the place (which ironically is exactly what makes it such a charismatic establishment in the first place) - sadly sometimes you want to find your toothbrush quickly!

Room Tip: It'd depend exactly what you are looking for. If as a couple - book early and ask for a top bun...

Great hostel! Easy to find location, their hostel bunk beds and showers aren't the best but you cannot fault the atmosphere of the hostel bar, virtually open all night, cheap alcohol! They also have a smoking room which is always handy in amsterdam! ;) Not many hostels here can boast this!

The Flying Pig downtown was literally the place to be during our four-night stay (all at the Pig) in Amsterdam this past week. The atmosphere is top notch, no other hostel I have ever stayed in can reach the level of "chill" in the air at the Pig downtown. The smoking room will always have a place in my heart, can't beat the free breakfast, and the bar service was great at any hour (even for a tea/juice!) The rooms were clean and warm and the locks were available at the front desk for lockers. The Flying Pig Downtown has officially set the bar in my book for "what a real hostel should look/feel/operate like" anywhere in the world. I wish there was a Flying Pig in every country.

Room Tip: I chose a top-bunk to cut down on room-noise (people coming in and out at all hours) but be sure to...
