“Hotel Arena”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

A large modern hotel with very friendly efficient staff. Breakfast was excellent, especially the choice of fresh bread which was delicious. However this came at a price and would have been better if bed and breakfast was an inclusive package.
I did not find the bathroom design particulary pleasant as although it was very clean, modern and well stocked I really did not wish to face my husband whilst he was sat on the loo. The design was such that as I was lying on the bed reading, he was using the bathroom facilities which were directly opposite and had become completely see through once lit up. All I can say is we have been married for a long time but for a newly together couple this would have been an embarrasment!

I would love to give this hotel 5 stars as the interior is definitely 'wow' for the most part and most of the staff were great, particular thanks to the Greek barman who definitely made our stay more enjoyable! We ended up staying longer than we had planned due to ill health, and the staff were thoughtful, checking we were ok in our room a couple of times a day.

However there were many little things which took away from these positives.

- shower(which is 'open', not in a cubicle) drain blocked, whole bathroom flooded on using it and all our towels were sodden just trying to make the floor ok to walk on - they could not mop up all the water however. Mentioned to reception but as far as we know it was not checked(certainly not fixed) so we used the bath for the rest of the stay. Admittedly the bath is probably the best I have ever been in but not sure that cancels out the inconvenience with the shower!

- daily room cleaning is quite horrendous. On first look it seemed like all they had done was made the bed.. then we noticed they had taken the rubbish bag out of the bin and left out on the sofa, left used cups dirty in room and bathroom, crisp packet left out, toilet roll which we had out to use for tissues not replaced.

- the studio room we had was not as special as I would expect from a boutique hotel(but lovely big bed) and TV sound and colour not great - internet on TV was horrible to use, take your laptop or use computers at reception! Due to aforementioned ill health we watched a few movies - individually these were ridiculously expensive but there is an option to watch as many as you like in 24 hrs for 15 euro.

- Asked for a banana to go with lunch but was told that was not possible as the fruit had been taken downstairs after breakfast. We did later notice there was a supply of apples at reception, but still..

- Very noisy corridor when people walked up and down it when we were in the room. No way you could sleep through people going for breakfast or nearby rooms being cleaned!

The food is good, to get value for money you need to eat a lot for breakfast though. It is very easy to get to and from the centre. The bar is a lovely place to spend time in. Most of the staff could not have been more helpful. We would return, but would also consider somewhere else if it was recommended.

We stayed at the arena and would not return, we booked on the basis of 4 stars. The hotel is dark and not very clean, the room was freezing, especially the bathroom - which was also dirty. No dressing table mirror and a hair dryer that blew a puff of heat at you, whilst making your finger go into a cramp as you had to push button down whilst using it ! Wifi advertised in rooms, but not in 220 or this section of hotel which we found out when we asked. We requested a room change and were told to pack up, leave bags at reception and check back at 3 to see if a room was available... We didn't bother, as they couldn't guarantee it would be. Some staff very friendly others rude and slightly arrogant. Nice lunch in bar, breakfast fine.
The hotel is two tram rides away from centre and a 20 euro taxi fare.
Love Amsterdam but not the arena.

Room Tip: Ask not to be in room 220

Nice hotel in Amsterdam. Its not located right smack int he middle of Amsterdam, but its easy to access the city center on foot or by tram. Takes roughly 10-15 minutes to walk to what is defined as the city center.

The design of the hotel is great, although the bathroom is a bit spacy! - Not alot of privacy, as the walls are made of glas. We had a room in two levels, which is great if you are a couple travelling, but I dought that it is a clever soution for someone travelling with children.

We didnt use the staff an awfull lot, but when we did, they were helpfull.

All in all a great hotel in Amsterdam, if you are ok with staying a bit outside the touristic area.

My buddy and I found ourselves in Amsterdam over the holidays. We are both members of the Canadian Forces and were off on our Christmas leave. After base-camping at a Macdonald's and calling a few places we eventually landed on the Hotel Arena. Along with an already reasonable price and location, they also offered us a sizable military discount. The staff was great, often asking us how our day/night was, what we had managed to see, and also providing suggestions on what to do and where to go, whenever we walked passed front desk. The building is quite contemporary, with high ceilings and modern furnishings. This also held true for the rooms. Even though we rented one of the smallest rooms available, the Studio Room, it had an awesome bathroom, decent sleeping quarters, and an upstairs loft with an additional TV and a desk. This also provided a great place to hang out, crush a few beers, watch some TV and check out some places to hit on the computer. The only thing to take note of, is there is no gym or pool, which we never really needed anyways, and the hotel is a little further from the city centre. However, it lies right on the TRAM network and getting to the hotspots is no problem at all. You can even walk it if your down for a bit of a hike. I overall had a great stay and would definitely stay there again without question.

Myself and my partner went to Amsterdam for 5 days, we stayed in the Easyjet Hotel for the first 4 nights and thought we would treat ourselves to a luxury stay for the last night. Although Hotel Arena is further out form the city (approx 2miles) the building, decor and furnishings are excellent. However the staff that we had the misfortune of encountering were unwelcoming and unhelpful and this really spoilt the stay for us. We had planned to spend our last evening in the Hotel eating at the restaurant and relaxing in the bar. After one drink in the bar we decided to travel back to the city, the atmosphere was cold and the bar staff were as welcoming and friendly as the staff at the front desk. Avoid this hotel if you like to be greeted with a smile and treated like a guest.

The location is good and not that far from the city centre. Would probably take 30-40min walk, but trams are quite good and run every 7-10mins. The staff was very nice and helpful. The room was excellent as it had the balcony work area. Brakfast was very rich and delicious allthough it was expensive.
The hotel needs a freshening up. Slow internet.
