Spend 2 nights in a 6-bed dorm.

Location: A very centrally located hostel. Every major sight is within walking distance. Also walking distance from the Central train station. Very big plus point for a affordable price in Amsterdam (things are not cheap there).
Hostel:
Pros - The room was sufficiently cosy, not too squeezy for 6 people. They had nice comfy pillows and beds (better than many hostels I've tried). There was even a basin in the room (however, it only had cold water).
Cons - The stairs up to the hostel reception and the rooms were very steep and small! Not suitable if you are carrying big bags or luggages. Maybe all places in Amsterdam are like that (bcos we went to Anne Frank's House, and it was like that too). There isn't much of a common space other than a small seating area for morning coffee / tea.
Staff / service: The staff were really friendly and nice. Normally, coffee / tea would be served from 7am. One morning, we had to leave early, at 630am. And when I spoke to the staff, he said he would wake up early just to make our beverage for us. That's really good service. Also, they provided a free map of Amsterdam (maps cost $ at the tourist info offices!). And, one of the staff also gave us tips on what time to visit Anne Frank's House to avoid the crowds. He was right - and we ended up first in line!
Oh and as a bonus, you'll get to meet Simba, the cute little resident cat in the hostel. :)

Overall, great staff, nice rooms, best location. My only little gripe is that the stairs are really steep and squeezy - not suitable for heavy bags or people who cannot walk in small stairways.

My friend and me spent two nights of vacation in this hostel in downtown Amsterdam. The rooms are just like the average hostel with bunk bed, sink and a couple of chairs.
Pro's: It's very close to Central Station and to the main streets (Dam square too); it's quite cheap compared to other Amsterdam accomodation and nearby there is a very good Bike Rental that is a must to see the city in the right way.
Con's: to get to the rooms you have to cope with a very steep stair (watch your backpack!), there is no breakfast (just some tea that we avoid to drink) and there are just two showers and two toilets for all guests (30 people when full).

This hostel is ideal if you're on a trip with friends. We shared a 6-bed room with 3 other girls from Germany and everything went fine. I chose this hostel because of the good reviews on tripadvisor and I must say they were right.
If you enter the hostel, it may seem a bit -how shall I say it- poor. The building is very small and the stairs are very very dangerous :D But the politeness (!) of the staff made everything OK. We felt at ease immediately and they were very helpful. There is also a nice coffeeshop across the street and the beds are very very (!!!) good! The shower is clean, but be sure to wake up early if you want to shower without standing in line ;)

As stated in the title, this hostel is all about the staff. With a very cozy atmosphere, it is also in a great location and it has fair prices. But most of all the staff is great, they are extremely helpful and considerate. Apart from that I just wanted to say thank you very much for yesterday, you were great

I stayed at Janson Hotel with 4 other friends so we booked the 5person dorm. I must say, such a room was PERFECT for what we needed (we had dreaded splitting up into 2 smaller rooms). The room was clean, basic and became a little home for 5 20 year old guys for a week. It was my first trip to Amsterdam, so finding the hotel was a little hard, yet after a few days the walk from the Hotel to the City (via the Van Gough museum and he museum district) became a pleasure rather than a chore.
By no means is this hotel a Hilton or Marriot. It is VERY cheap and if you share the similar philosophy that cleanliness and friendly staff make up for what hotels like this lack, than you really should consider the Hotel Janson
As you can imagine, being 5 "lads", we had gone to Amsterdam for hedonistic reasons rather than for the historical scenery, the small team of staff realised this and quickly told us about local Coffee shops and Bars. On several evenings we missed he curfew (i think midnight, but not sure) however the staff were always more than happy to let us back in after hours.
For a group of young fun loves who need a place to rest in between green hours, this is defiantly worth a look!

Room Tip: Beware of the steep stairs!

We originally booked 5 nights stay here, on our second night we arrived back at the hostel to find the night staff abusing a female guest because she laughed and he did not like it. I witnessed another guest try to step to get the man to calm down - this guest was then punched in the face by the STAFF member on shift. This man then tried to fight several other guests and was abusive and carried on like a school yard bully. I have never seen such disgusting treatment of GUESTS. Some guests called the police so that they could leave safely - us included. The hostel then refused to refund the money for the following nights stay although we gave 24 hours notice. I also witnessed another guest be abused because he wanted to have a shower after checkout time. Staff are incredibly RUDE. These people are DODGY. They also tried to delete our booking on hostel world so that we could not leave a review. The place also has 2 showers available for about 30 people. Rooms are also small and there is minimal space to put your bags and jackets etc. NOT value for money.

Dear Guest,

If guests behave aggressive and get drunk, we call the police. That is why you got arrested and escorted out of the building. You really did it to yourself.

We are not even going into all the lies in the review.
