“Maes-A wonderful home away from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2006

We just returned from 4 wonderful days in Amsterdam. Maes B&B was just great! The service is perfect, Vlad and Ken were both there to greet us and welcome us to their terrific establishment.
We arrived very early in the morning upon which we were seated at the table and provided a great breakfast and excellent coffee. Every morning the table was full with breads, jams, ham and cheese, nutella, fruit etc. It was great and the people who were staying there were quite friendly too.

We stayed in a a queen room that was so comfortable (a rare find in Europe to have a queen sized bed). We had the room with the fabulous Italian tiled and outfitted bathroom. You had to climb some stairs to get there but it was worth it. The nice surprise in this bathroom was the jacuzzi. We used it and it was so nice to relax after long days walking and touring the city.

The staff is so nice and helpful. Jason was there for the most part and he was so attentive in the mornings.

Vlad gave us maps and between he and Jason they helped us make our way around the city. They have an assortment of books to learn more about different attractions etc. Lots to do in this city.
There is a line of shops outside the B&B that are really quite terrific, one store has all sorts of ecclectic gadjets and unique gifts. We enjoyed it. There is an awesome Thai restaurant right next door. Some of the best Thai food we have ever had. Vlad also suggested a great restaurant that we enjoyed so much. It had the best ribs I have ever had.

There are no locks on the doors to the rooms at the B&B but I never felt uncomfortable about this at all. All our belongings and valuables were extremely safe. Our privacy was respected as well.

Like the title says, this felt like home away from home. I highly recommend this B&B. We intend to stay there again if our travels get us back to Amsterdam. I really hope we do. I would be thrilled to stay in the same room again.

I can't imagine it could get any better than this if you enjoy B&B's.
Go to Maes - you won't regret the decision.

This is our third stay at Maes and each time it gets better. Vlad and Ken are the perfect hosts. We arrived late afternoon on a Sunday. Vlad missed a class at the gym to meet and greet us. On arrival, we were taken to the quaint communal kitchen / dining area for a cup of tea and some Dutch apple cake. He gave us some excellent advice on where to go and where to eat and then helped us to our room, carrying our luggage. There were four of us and we had the attic penthouse! A charming attic suite of rooms, comprising bedroom, bathroom, sepearte toilet, living area waith fold up beds, tv, cd player and hairdryer, and at the far end small kitchen loking out onto Herenstraat. Once he was sure we were comfortable he left us to unpack.

The attic penthouse is truly delightful. However, not suitable for people with mobility issues as access is via a steep starcase and a small door which you do have to bend to enter. Worth it though!

The breakfasts are amazing, consisting fresh Dutch breads, meats, cheeses, fruit, yoghurts, cakes and around 15 or 16 different jams and spreads. All this with fresh orange juice and scalding fresh tea and coffee!

There really is nowhere else to stay in Amsterdam! Even if money were no object, I'd choose Maes, for its freindliness, excellent breakfast and welcoming atmosphere! See you next year Vlad and Ken!

this is a little gem that will make your stay in amsterdam very special. a beautiful old house near the canals but close enough to the city centre for all your needs. the owners are charming and very helpful, the smell of coffee wafting up through the narrow stairs is the perfect start to the day, and it could help wake your brain up properly if you discover the lovely little 'coffee shop' just round the corner on the main canal
we will definitely stay here again if we get the chance. we had the attic room, the stairs are narrow but its not too bad. the space in the suite was much appreciated

We spent four nights in October at the two B&B's operated by Ken and Vlad. Our first night was a double at Maes. The next three nights, we stayed at the second B&B a few doors down. Unexpectedly, we were given a ground floor apartment at no extra charge, which included a full kitchen, living room, bedroom and small interior courtyard.

Both accomodations were great, although I would highly recommend the apartment if you can book it.

Probably the best part of the stay were Ken's restaurant recommendations, especially the brown cafe De Reiger (sp?) which offered great local food.

We didn't realize how great this location was until we were walking back from the bike rental shop next to the train station on a Sunday afternoon and got to see the crowds and madness in the main tourist ghetto. The Jordaan, with its cozy restaurants, great shops, and convenience to the places we wanted to go, was just great.

We just stayed at Maes Bed & Breakfast in October based on this site's recommendations and it was fabulous. We booked well in advance and got the room overlooking the garden with the garden jacuzzi tub and oversized shower which we highly recommend. You have to go up a short flight of steep stairs to get to tub/ shower, but it is worth it! I am over 50 with a bad ankle and I had no problems going up & down. Both the shower & bath are wonderful and make a perfect end to a long day of wandering through Amsterdam.
Ken & Vlad run an excellent B & B. They really know what hospitality is and will do whatever you need to make sure your stay is enjoyable. We met a lot of great folks at he wonderful breakfasts we had each morning. The location is excellent as well. Maes is a short walk from the Train Station, but it is even easier if you take the tram down 1 stop from the station. It's only about 5-6 blocks from the Tram Stop. There are some excellent restaurants in all price ranges in the neighborhood. I was very satisfied with my stay at Maes!

We used TripAdvisor for the first time and decided to book a room at the Maes B&B in Amsterdam. We returned last night and just had to add our own review of the Maes B&B to confirm that the reams of wonderful reviews you'll read about Vlad, Ken & their team at Maes are true!

We spent 4 nights staying in one of the double en-suite rooms in the annex house on Herenstraat. The room was gorgeously presented with ginger flower were arranged by the bedside. The bathroom was spotlessly clean with a beautiful landscape mirror and huge shower.

From the moment we enquired about rooms the service we received was fantastic and, most importantly, it's quite clear that Ken, Vlad and the team that work with them take great pride in their work far more than many large impersonal hotels. This shines through in the attention to detail they demonstrate at Maes. Thinks like having a computer available just for guests (and at no extra cost) meant that we didn't have to trail round Amsterdam looking for an internet cafe.

The breakfasts also were fabulous - we had a great debate about whether to stay in a b&b or whether to find a self-catering apartment but I'm so glad went to Maes. Every morning we were presented with a fresh selection of breads, dutch cheese, ham, croissants, pain au chocolat/raisin, yoghurt, fruit, pancakes and jams. The team at Maes made sure we were always topped up with juice and coffee and were just so attentive and friendly. It was also a good opportunity to chat to other guests and get great advice from Vlad on everything from the best vegetarian restaurants to taking a trip on the canals or visiting a market. Breakfast is never normally high on our list of priorities but it really set us up for the day and we're missing it now we're home!!!!

The location is great too - especially as we soon discovered that all of the cosiest pubs and cafes were in the little streets of the Jordaan, within a short stroll. Also having our own key meant that we could happily pop back with supplies and sit in the guest kitchen or balcony for our lunch and have an afternoon nap or read a book before heading off for a night out.

We had wanted a holiday that would be relaxing, without the usual hectic lifestyle that we have in London, and Maes really did help to make this possible.

  • Liked — Fantastic breakfasts
  • Disliked — Quite steep stairs...but good for working off one too many croissants

We stayed at Maes for two nights in October with our two children (14 & 8), we arrived in the morning after setting off from home at 5am. We were greeted by Ken who promptly provided us with not only coffee but breakfast including pancakes for our 8 year old son (Pancakes were top of his priority list whilst in Holland!!). You wouldn't get that in one of your major hotels (well not for free anyway).
We were staying in the Attic room. Obviously this is at the top of the house and required climbing some very steep stairs to get to. Getting down was interesting as you had to go down backwards (The kids loved it).
The room was great, complete with it's own kitchen (Fridge (with bottle of wine), Microwave & sink) not that we used this as guests have full use of the communal kitchen at any time of the day or night.
Breakfast are interesting as you meet people from all parts of the world (Oliver was fascinated with Uncle Rik from Texas).
Ken & Vlad were great hosts and when we return to Amsterdam we will be booking Maes again.
