“Absolutely Perfect in Every Single Way”

Maes B&B is home from home! The house and rooms were spotless, modern and comfortable. Every little detail had been attended to, from underfloor heating and a fully functioning kitchen to free wireless and computer. The response via email when booking the rooms were prompt, clear and concise, honest and very helpful. The English was excellent.

On arrival one of the owners was there to meet us personally and show us around the house and give us tips on where to go, things to do. He showed us where areas of interest were on a map that was framed in the house. We received good local advice from him and nothing was too much trouble.

The breakfast was lovely and all you could eat.

We certainly felt like we'd struck gold when we arrived and we will certainly return. I would strongly recommend it. It's SUPERB value for money!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Maes B & B from Christmas to New Year's. We have both been there several times and wanted to stay somewhere less touristy where we could also meet people. This B&B blew our expectations out of the water! The price is very reasonable, excellent location, and fabulous service. We were served breakfast every morning where we met and got to know interesting people staying at the B&B. Our room was spacious, very modern, and clean. Vlad and Ken made us feel at home and answered any questions we had. There were always snacks stocked in the kitchen. The B&B is a short walk to shops, bars, and restaurants. Many attractions are close by; the farthest we walked was 20 minutes. We rarely needed to take public transit. I highly suggest this B&B, it was a wonderful experience!

We just returned from a wonderful stay in Amsterdam and at Maes B and B in the Canal House. At first we had a different idea what a private bath meant. But the following day all was taken care of. The two young men who took care of us were very accomodating and would drop everything to help us. The one basement room facing the front of the building was spectacular, The bathroom was done in black and white with a warming rack for your towels. Breakfast was a main event with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, cheese, meat, a variety of breads and even fresh dutch pancakes. YUM! When returning to the house, you felt like you were home! We had a Christmas tree in the living room. The wine even tasted better there. We look forward to a return visit.

My husband and I spent Thanksgiving in Amsterdam and stayed at Maes B&B. The location was perfect. Ken and Vlad were very friendly and extremely helpful. The rooms were modern, clean and roomy. The beds had down blankets which were very warm since it was the temp was in the 30's (0c). Each morning we were welcomed with an amazing breakfast prepared by either Bing or Jason that included everything from fresh fruits, pressed coffee, delicious Poffertjes, fresh baked breads, orange juice, etc. Amazing! We will be staying here each time we visit Amsterdam.

This is a very nice place to stay in Amsterdam. The location is good, the place is modern and tastefully furnished, the service is good and friendly and breakfast is good. You have breakfast with the other guests at a common table, so you should be open to that. I stayed here with my friend and Maes B&B lived up to our expectations!

I stayed there. Good location. Nice people. Good breakfast. What I found unnerving was when I noticed what I believe is a video camera in the kitchen, dining room and sitting area/lounge that was recording (?) us as we all ate breakfast. I can understand a video camera at the outside door to deter thieves, but in the kitchen/dining room? Is it there to see who steals corn flakes at 2AM? I might be wrong so would the owners/managers please respond here? I cannot really recommend this hotel until they respond.

Here is a response to this travellers request for us to respond to his issues of privacy.

First we are happy that he enjoyed the facilities of our newly renovated B&B on the canal which is also our private house not a hotel.

Now in regards to the guests issues with privacy.

We can happily say that he is totally incorrect on the idea that we are actually recording the guests at all times. As he mentioned we do have security cameras in our common usage areas of the B&B. The B&B is set up as our private home but the common areas are open to all the guests. There is a common living room where guests can sit and relax from a day of touring the city, there is a guest kitchen where the guests can make a meal for themselves if they wish to and there is another breakfast kitchen where the guests computer is for their use at no charge whatsoever at all times.

Yes the guests can use all our breakfast items as well if they ever need a snack or feel hungry. This is our concept so there is no need to think that someone will steal something such as cornflakes as why would they steal this if it is readily available for their use at at all times. We do not work with the idea of someone stealing, as the guests have fully usage of many areas in the house not just kept to their room to sleep in. If I had issues about guests stealing from me then I would limit them to only their rooms and nothing else...gone all the extras that are associated with our B&B. We do not want that at all so it is our choice to keep it open.

We have cameras set up in the breakfast kitchen where we set up the breakfast, 1 in the living room and one in the entry hall. We are not here to spy on guests as we open our houses fully to them and offer so much more...so there is no privacy issue whatsoever defintiely not from our point of view. It is our wish to insure ourselves, since we cannot be 24hrs/7days a week on the premises, as our office is not in the same building that the building is secure...and that the doors or windows are not left open for strangers to enter the house, that all the lights are turned off ( yes these issues have all happened many times due to careless and inconsiderate guests not thinking) and to see how busy it is for our breakfast help if we need to jump in and help out.

We actually do tell the guests at check in time that there are cameras to help us keep an eye on the common areas in the building with the same reasons mentioned above. Perhaps this person forgot that when we checked him in or that one of our help checked him in and forgot to mention this.

What is truly amazing is that in every HOTEL ( which we are not by any means) there are hidden or visable cameras in all common areas including hallways/stairways etc... There is never an issue made over those cameras as that is expected of a hotel for the security of all guests and their belongings with even recordings of the cameras. Even though a few hundred persons may have a key to enter your room and steal something which we read about regularly on this site. Yet this guest seems to have major issues of cameras in common usage areas...If something was stolen from him then he wouldn't have issues if we actually could see who stole it now would he...???

It is really nice and thoughtful of someone to give us such a rating based on something that is also very explanable and very common. If that person actually took the time to even ask what the cameras are for it could have been explained at that time...but as usual we are confronted with the situation only when it has been made an issue on such a site as TripAdvisor. I truly find it very inconsiderate that guests cannot offer us the opportunity to explain a situation or complaint face to face...so we can actually answer or solve issues at that time. It seems that the world is going more and more over to the annoymus person via computer communication after the fact. What a pity as the one on one communicatioin is what makes our business so enjoyable.

We wish to thank you for making our job such a pleasant one. We hope to have insured all future guests of the fact that they are not being watched by BIG BROTHER but making sure that they are safe and secure in our B&B home.

My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend at the end of October 2010. The B&B is in a lovely location in the western canal belt about 10 minutes walk from the main train station. Ken and Vlad are charming hosts and made us feel very welcome. We found the whole booking process to be very smooth and Ken was very helpful in giving us suggestions for vegetarian-friendly restaurants nearby.

We were delighted to be upgraded to an apartment a couple of doors along the street. The accommodation was excellent and very stylish and we really didn't want to leave! The breakfasts are very generous, leisurely and convivial, sitting down around one large table with the other guests.

This might not be the cheapest place to stay, but the quality of the accommodation and warmth and friendliness of Ken & Vlad make this an perfect place to stay in Amsterdam. We're already planning our next visit!
