“The perfect place to stay in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2009

Our family of four stayed in the Sunflower apartment for two nights in June, based on the recommendations of other TripAdvisors. We were not disappointed in the least. The Sunhead has a great location central to what Amsterdam has to offer visitors. It is easy to find, and is within walking distance (or a single tram ride) of just about everywhere in town.

We left our car at the Sloterdijk P+R (park and ride) and took the tram to Westermarkt. It was a short walk to the Sunhead, where Carlos greeted us warmly. Up traditionally steep A'dam stairs to the apartment and we were quickly settled in. The apartment is comfortably furnished. One of the best parts is Carlos' guide book with accurate and entertaining entries on the local scene.

The breakfast was terrific, and conversation with Carlos was even better. Our kids (late teens) had a great time (jazz at the Bimhuis, bikes in Vondelpark, farmer's market, and Anne Frank house), but I think that breakfast with Carlos may have been the highlight.

You can't go wrong at the Sunhead of 1617!

We stayed at the Sunhead in May 2009. It is in a perfect location - an easy walk from the railway station, overlooking a canal, right next to Jordaan and only a very short stroll from the centre. We had the Red Tulip room which is right at the top of the house (up a steep stair case, which was fine for us even though we are not fit!) with great views over the canal, and a really characterful and comfortable room. Carlos is very friendly and helpful, breakfast was great with fresh fruit, loads of homemade jams etc. Highly recommended.

We really enjoyed our stay in sunhead 1617! The room was nice and cosy, the breakfast great and the boat trips were the topping. Thanks, Carlos and Roelf-Jan! S&D from Munich

After almost a month of traveling in Europe we ended our trip with 3 nights in Amsterdam at Sunhead. What a great place, what a great city, and what a great location Carlos is fun, warm, provides a great breakfast, and is the ultimate host. We were lucky enough to get the apartment, and if we return, we will ask for it again. The view from the windows down to the canal is the ultimate people watching as all sorts of boats and bicyclists go by. We tried to make it a daily routinewith wine glass in hand and snack before heading out for the night. If you are nice, Carlos will arrange a boat trip through the canals which is the ultimate way to see the city, second only to renting a bike and pedaling around town with the locals. We are from Seattle, and the climate and atmosphere made us feel at home.

A word to the wise that intend to stay here - pack light or have a strong back to get your luggage up a very narrow and steep staircase.

My fiance and I just visited Amsterdam for our first time. The Sunhead was the perfect place for our trip. This amazing house is historical, but most importantly it is cozy, warm and comfortable. The room (Red Tulip) was awesome with its high vaulted ceiling and the awesome view from the window. And Carlos even put fresh red tulips in our room for our arrival (very sweet and I'm a sucker for some fresh flowers). Everything was clean an so cozy.

The absolute highlight of this stay was Carlos who is the most gracious host. And he's soooo funny beyond being super helpful. Actually, we had dinner reservations and he gave us PERFECT directions on how to get there.

Additionally, breakfast was AMAZING. The homemade jams were so delicious with the freshly baked bread and amazing cheese and fresh eggs. By the way, Carlos makes the best cup of coffee in Amsterdam. Not sure what it is but man, I dream of Carlos' coffee now that we're back in the states. And breakfast is served in the coziest light filled room that makes you want to stay and have coffee with Carlos all day!

I'm done gushing now, but if you are traveling to Amsterdam, GO TO SUNHEAD! Its an all around amazing stay and will make you want to go back time and again. We'll definitely be staying there on our return trips to Amsterdam.

My boyfriend and I recently returned from a 2-week trip to Europe, and our stay at the Herengracht apartment at Sunhead was definitely the highlight. The B&B is within easy walking distance of major tourist sites and the craziness of the Red Light District, but is located on a quiet, safe and gorgeous canal.

Our apartment was located in the same building as the two regular B&B rooms. There were other guests in those rooms during our stay, but we barely heard them except for the occasional squeek on the stairs. But that's part of the charm of staying in a 400-year-old building, so it didn't bother us in the slightest.

For those of you who are researching places to stay in Amsterdam, there are a few things you should know about Sunhead. First, all of the previous reviews are correct - Carlos, our host, makes a killer breakfast. Everything is fresh, homemade, high-quality and delicious. The breakfasts carried us through to dinner with only a small snack in between, and we are big eaters!

Second, FREE WIFI!! After paying up to 10 Euros for maybe 30 minutes of internet access at chain hotels, it was very refreshing to have free unlimited web access. This is a rarity in Europe.

Third, Carlos can guide you to the best of everything Amsterdam has to offer. Our apartment came with his "Blue Guide", which gives thorough and extremely candid reviews of all sorts of restaurants, shops and tourist activities. We chose restaurants based on the Blue Guide and it never failed us.

Finally, the B&B is a very comfortable, relaxing place to come home to after a long day of walking around the city. If you are looking for an alternative to generic chain hotels but don't want to sacrifice convenience and comfort, look no further.

Thanks, Carlos! We had a wonderful stay.

My mother and I celebrated her 77th birthday with a visit to Amsterdam. We were warmly welcomed by Carlos at Sunhead and were delighted to stay in the apartment for eight days. The location is perfect as we were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go in the city. It was a pleasure to open the window overlooking the canal every morning and to see the comings and goings of the canal boats and to enjoy the tourists photographing the house. At night it is very quiet and great for sleeping. We found the beds super comfortable. Breakfast was fabulous and Carlos has a terrific sense of humour! He was full of helpful information too and steered us to some sights we would have otherswise missed. We loved our stay at Sunhead and would definately return!
