Sunhead is a beautifully appointed and well restored canal house on the Herrengracht. It's a great central location. The rooms are very comfortable. Carlos does a great breakfast! If you want some authentic Amsterdam living go here!! Tim Robinson, Hamburg

We have just returned from an absolutely amazing trip to Amsterdam. The Bed & Breakfast where we stayed was truly fantastic. It was centrally located and offered such tasteful decoration! The hosts too were extremely friendly and helpful.

The outcome of a holiday can be significantly influenced by where you choose to stay and if going to Amsterdam, we would strongly recommend staying at Sunhead Bed & Breakfast or Apartments - as we will do again in the future - as the experience was truly pleasant!

I recently had the good fortune to stay at the Sunhead of 1617 B&B in Amsterdam at what must be one of the most ideal locations in this beautiful city, a five min. walk from Dam Square.
"Live" is probably the better word, for my stay lasted one month!

On arrival my luggage was taken to the red room overlooking the historic Herengracht, by Arno, who also took the time to explain the workings of all the gadgets in the room. The stairs were perfectly manageable, even for an acrophobic like myself.
The room had an understated, old Dutch charm, with a small micro, coffee machine, kettle, TV, telephone, fan and free internet access.. The establishment is kept squeaky clean by charming, helpful , Arno and Edward. After a long flight from Canada, it was pure bliss to snuggle into a crisp, clean bed, under the ancient wooden beams. I was home.

Breakfast was prepared and served by a very entertaining and informative host/owner, Carlos. Fresh fruit cup, a variety of fresh juices, delicious Dutch breads and cheeses, eggs, ham and good coffee.

On the very first morning, the guests were invited on a boat trip on the canals by attentive co-host/owner Roelf-Jan. This happens on an impromtu basis, weather permitting.

Sunhead is a relaxed, quiet, non-smoking place, and although the hosts/staff are always ready to assist you, they are not the hovering kind.

A truely lovely and unique B&B. Amazing breakfasts, comfy beds, clean rooms, perfect location and a very warm host Carlos who's decorated Sunhead with his own beautiful artwork.

  • Liked — So uniquely decorated
  • Disliked — Steep stairs, but then everywhere in the dam is like that!

We visited Amsterdam in April 2007 for 4 nights and booked this B&B based on the reviews in this site. We were disappointed with the room. The reviews about the stairs are all true. The room it a the very top and the stairs are very narrow and dangerous. Parts of the stairs did not even have a railing. You need to be shape for this. The room is very small when compared to the pictured. The room was clean. The bathroom is what you would have expected. The room however has very little air circulation. You do need to have the window opened but we got bugs in all the time especially at night. With the window open you could hear the quarter hour chimes of Westerkerk all day and night. That was nice for the first day but after that it was not. The TV did not work and it took several tries from staff to get it working. There was no phone connected as advertised in the ad, we had to ask special. There was to be a dedicated line with its own number but we never received that. The walls are paper thin. Just normal talking you could hear the other guests across the hall. The breakfast the first day was nice. The second day it was just about the same except for the eggs. The guests across the hall must have complained to the staff about the notice because they would not sit with us at breakfast even though we 2 empty spaces. They just stood in the hall waiting for us to finish. The breakfast room only has space for four and there are three rooms in the B&B. When we went for the meal on the third day we where told we have to wait but not given a time when to return. The fourth day we where not able to take the meal because we had a early flight to catch. We paid for four meals as part of the room and only received two and no refund offered. The staff was friendly upon arrival but did not interact with us. This B&B appeared to have the charm from the ad but is lacking. We stayed in two other cities in Europe on this trip and this place was the most expensive of the three. The other two cites we rented an apartment and they were far better.
