Awful. If you like to score crack or any other Class A hard drug then this area is the place to go. Location was scary - enroute to the hotel once off the tram, we were hassled by toothless skagheads demanding money as well as having the misfortune to stumble across a bunch of hardnuts exchanging large sums of money for suspicious looking packages. Very scary indeed. Do not be fooled by the gallery on the official website as we were, it looks nothing like this. Room was extremely basic and very old, in desperate need of new beds and shower, etc. Didn't stay the 2nd night we booked as it was uncomfortable and just overall horrible. The only thing going for it was that it was quiet. Avoid!

Room Tip: Don't book one at Hem Hotel Amsterdam.

Thank you for your review. We are really sorry your experience with our hotel was so bad. The hotel is situated in a residential area, and most people in the neighbourhood are normal Amsterdam residents. We are sorry you ran into the wrong persons, but we can not do anything about people that walk in the streets around the hotel. We have recently renewed a big part of the hotel, so over all the hotel and the rooms are tidy. If you have a problem with the room you are staying in, you can always contact the reception and, if available, we can give you another room that meets your wishes more. We hope you will reconsider and maybe try our hotel again some time so we can change your opinion about us.
Kind regards, HEM hotel Amsterdam

Last week, I stayed in this hotel for two nights.

The room was decent sized but very basic. The mattress were too old and needed replacement. The shower was well below the expectations of a basic shower. Having said so, room was quiet and no disturbances.

Location wise it was just across the highway and well connected to public transport. Hotel charges for parking car.

The lady at reception was helpful.

Ambiance and environment in the hotel is not very encouraging. Pathways are shabby and it is no way a 3 star Hotel.

Thank you for writing this review. It is too bad you did not like the room you stayed in. If the room does not live up to your expectations, you can always contact the reception and they will try to get you another room. We are trying to learn from some bad reviews we received in the past and we have already renewed a big part of the hotel, like the public areas. We will take a look at all the rooms as well to see what we can improve. We are glad to read you are positive about the service at the reception and the location of the hotel.
We really hope you will give us a second chance and come again some time in the future so we can show you we really are a 3 star hotel!
Kind regards, HEM hotel Amsterdam

We booked this hotel before reading the reviews, after reading through trip advisor we started to panic but apon walking into the hotel lobby we was presently surprised, the reception staff were helpful an polite. Our room was clean an modern with everything u need minus a Kettle and an opening window! Bathroom was modern with a good shower.
Food and drink in the hotel is expensive but that's what I'd expect from a hotel, 2 minutes under the bridge u'll find an Lidl and a Dutch version of the Co-Op which is a lot cheaper than the hotel. There is a food corner in the hotel lobby selling sandwiches, smoothies, tea and coffee, majority of the drinks are €2.50. They also have a selection of hot food eg. Chips, tosties ect all priced from €3 - €16. Vending machines also sells chocolate at €1.50.
I would HIGHLY recommend printing a map with directions from the tram stop to the hotel.

Thank you for writing this review. We are really glad you did stay in our hotel and we could prove to you the bad reviews were wrong. It's so nice to read you have enjoyed your stay in our hotel and you liked the lobby, the helpful staff and the clean room. The drinks in the hotel are off course a bit more expensive than the super market around the corner. But we do indeed offer a large variety of food and beverages. It's up to you if you make use of this.
Kind regards, HEM Hotel Amsterdam
(A tip for future guests: if you send us an email, we can send you a map of the walking directions from the tram stop, so you can easily find the hotel.)

A group of 6 of us stayed at the Hem in October 2011 for 1 night. Check in was quick and easy. Rooms were clean and tidy, comparable to a Travel Lodge. Plenty of hot water for the showers and TV had a couple of English channels. Facilities adequate, bar and eating area downstairs but a little pricey. Main complaint is that the hotel is situated approx 15/20 mins by tram outside of the city center. Cant see the hotel from the tram stop, had to ask the way, which took us through the middle of a residential area of flats. I would have been nervous had I been on my own. Check in isnt until 2:00pm but when you arrive at Central Station there is a baggage drop where for £4 you can leave your case while you enjoy the city and pick it up when you are ready to head for the hotel. If you are driving there is adequate on site parking.

Thank you for writing this review. We are glad to read you had a good stay in our hotel. Thanks for the nice comments about the quick check-in, the tidy rooms and our facilities. Your only complaint is the hotel being 15 - 20 tram minutes outside the city center. Most of our guests see this as a positive thing. Most of the hotels that are inside the city center are much more expensive. Our hotel is just outside the city center, therefore we have lower prices and you are not far from the city center. There is a good public transport connection day and night, so you can reach the city center within 20 minutes. If you arrive early it is possible to leave your luggage at Central Station indeed, but it is also possible to leave the luggage in our luggage room (and this is for free).
We hope to welcome you in our hotel again some day!
Kind regards, HEM Hotel Amsterdam
