On a whole I'd say this is an average hotel for slightly above average cost for what you get. There is an element of hostel about it with the vending machine giving tooth brushes and the rooms having very little facilities but it's reasonably comfortable and the staff are mostly quite helpful.

Pros
The beds are comfortable and large (we had a super king and our friends had twins). The rooms are mostly clean with wardrobe space, although only 2 coat hangers. There is food and drink available until late and the reception staff are friendly. The tv in the room is good and has plenty of channels for when you need a bit of relaxing time. There is a lidl near by and a tram not too far.

Cons
The bed sheets don't fit at all so are pretty pointless after a few seconds of being in it. There was large damp patches in the hallways, holes in the room carpets and plenty of fonts and marks over all the walls and ceilings. There are two lifts, one only goes to floor 3 and the other goes up to 4 but doesn't feel safe and has signs asking you to close the doors manually so it keeps working, plus it smells bad. Our AC didn't work and the fan we were given doesn't cool the room at all. The walls are paper thin and a lot of the doors on to the hall have big gaps under and above.

The location is quite far from the centre of Amsterdam but there is a tram about 5 mins walk away that will do returns for €7. The walk in through a long park is nice but takes at least an hour walking at a pace.

We had an unpleasant experience when out toilet broke and we were rudely told by a member of staff to just turn the water off at the stop tap every time we needed the loo.

Overall, I won't be back but it hasn't ruined our holiday , just made it less enjoyable than we had hopes for €485 for 5 nights.

The professional photos show on their website do not represent what was actually received upon our arrival (Middle of July 2014). The photos show clean and newer looking rooms. Upon arrival we were a few hours early so we waited downstairs in the lobby, which is nothing special but at this point we were fine with it. Once we received and went to our room we were unpleasantly surprised to find out where we were suppose to be staying for 3 night. We looked at the beds and the sheets were stained and the room was very worn and grungy looking. Right away we looked in the bathroom to find the conditions were old and dirty with mold and scum on the tiles. As we went to sit on the bed we seen a little bug on the pillow. At this point we never even opened our bags but we decided this was not for us and tried to tell hotel management what we seen but they were less than interested in doing anything and told us "this is a price point 3 star hotel - this is what you have to expect". This place and the people running it should be avoided. Worst hotel we seen in Europe and the only one we actually left.

Room Tip: Best tip is to find something else and avoid this place all together.

Overall was a nice hotel, should be named as a hostel though, but keep your belongings locked away, my hair dryer and most make up was stolen, they wasn't interested in sorting it out and on the day of leaving they offered a replacement hair dryer (nice of them) oo it doesnt work, so they're obviously looking for new hair dryers. Also if your looking to go into or near central everyday your better off paying more to stay closer it is a long walk to the tram.

First of all, the pictures that they provide are NOT accurate. They make their property look very charming and quaint, which was NOT my experience. I expected to pay a bit in order to stay in a hotel with a carkpark/parking lot, but when we got inside, we were bewildered to see what our money had bought. This hardly fits the name of hotel. Hostel would be more accurate. The hotel had a derelict and dingy feel all about it. When we got into our first room, it had a funny smell. As we looked around, we found that the drainpipe in the bathroom was open. The shower drained directly into an open pipe, which had dirty, stagnant water just open to the air. We requested a change in room, which they gave us, but the new room had the exact same problem. We gave up hoping that we would find a reasonable shower and just covered the drainpipe with a spare towel. Obviously we had to move this towel in order to shower, and when the first person in our group tried to shower, his foot got caught in the open drain and he fell in the shower, injuring himself. Not promising! In the first evening, we noticed that our room seemed to have a lot of mosquitos. The room felt stuffy, as there was no real air conditioner or swamp cooler or fan, so we opened the window, but that did not help. The next day, there were still an awful lot of mosquitos. We covered the drainpipe with the towel again and were unable to shower for the rest of our trip. (Gross.) The mosquitos stopped showing up, though, which leads us to believe that they were coming out of the drainpipe all along. Also, every evening, we could hear a large number of rowdy guests up and down our corridor. Their closed doors and our closed door did nothing to block out the noises of their drinking and sometimes even fighting. It made restful sleep impossible. Altogether, not worth the money we paid, given how far out of the town it was and the horrible quality of the living situation.

My boyfriend and I stayed there for five nights. It was very nice in most ways! The room was clean and quite big and the housekeeping was nice. In the lobby there is a mini restaurant which is open until late in the evening so it was possible to eat something very late if you wanted to. The bar was also nice. Breakfast was good but quite expensive (10 €). The location is okay but you have to walk about 7-10 minutes to the tram which was the most boring part. Recommend this hotel for young people and if you get a good deal it's definitely worth the stay in lovely Amsterdam :)

West Side Inn (the old HEM) helped make our recent stay relaxing. The staff are so helpful and nice: getting extra pillows & towels, no problem. There are two lifts where most hotels don't even have one! The rooms are large for Amsterdam and my request for a window that opens got me a huge, fully opening panel: A'dam is hot in July but our top floor room stayed cool. The grounds are a lovely garden with many private benches so that smokers don't feel like lepers. A few minutes' walk to Delflanplein with AHeijn & Liddel markets, sandwich & other shops, it is also close to a canal where we saw a hunting heron, a family of swans and a nestful of moorhen chicks. The ride in on the #2 showcases many small businesses outside the Centrum. Who cares if it's five minutes more to the Leidseplein?
