This is not the place for you if you worry about extras, fresh paint jobs, artworks or posturepedic beds with cotton linen, but my partner and I were happy enough at Kooyk. We stayed for 3 nights. Got the train form the airport and a tram from the main station, then walked across the canal. Locals are willing to help if you get lost. Our room was outdated but large, with the window facing out to the canal and street corner. No noise and pretty to look out. We shared toilet/shower with ground floor occupants - no big deal. Around the corner is a square with bars and local eateries at good prices. There's also arthouse cinemas, concert halls and close to art galleries. If you've got walking shoes on though , most parts of the city are easily accessable on foot from the hotel. My partner and I had a fabulous time exploring the city, getting lost and stopping at out-of-the-way cafes for apple pie and coffees. Also loved the breakfast spread each day at Kooyk!! Meat cuts, eggs, a variety of jams and breads/rolls, juice, cereal etc. YUMMY!! As we were there in winter, I was worried I may not be warm enough. Not a problem there either. I would recommend this spot to budget conscious, not too fussy people who want to put the luggage down, eat a good brekkie and get out and see the city.

Location is very good for this hotel - it is close to transport links and most attractions are within a 20-25min walk. It is just set off a busy square, but noise wasnt an issue ( apart from morning when there always seemed to be some workings goin on-but at least it meant we got up at a good time).
The room was fine and clean, double bed was two twins pushed together, which was ok, but not great. Tv had many working channels and there was a sink also. Big large door/windows into the back for fresh air. Clean room, but pillows were a bit crappy. bed was made for us everyday. Security was ok, the door had a double lock from the inside and a swipe card from the outside ( also used for the main entrance). They had securiy deposits, which we didnt use. We wouldnt have felt safe to leave any valuables in the room though.
The rooms were clean and the bathroom and toilet were also clean. However, the toilet was the tinyest thing ever! You could JUST about fit! THe shower was ok, but the only problem was the constant smell of damp everytime you walked past the shower room ( which for us was everytime we went to out room!).
The breakfast room was lovely and the breakfast was also good. There were either boiled or scrambled eggs, toast or bread, butter, jams, nutella, cheese and a selction of cold meats, tea and coffee. The staff were welcoming and pleasant. We noticed a computer and also a vending machine with snacks, which i suppose is good if you get hungry. All in all, it was fine, just the damp smell and tiny toilet really that needs improving. Also, if you pay by card its 5%, so i'd recommend bringing cash!

I've stayed in this hotel for four nights in Oct/08, and those were the most terrible nights of our 1 month stay in Europe. First of all, our room on the second floor could only be reached through the infamous steepest stairway I've ever seen. Then, we arrived in a pretty large room, with a balcony, which at first seemed quite nice. At 3am, 4am and 6am, when other guests used this balcony for their own post-party purposes, our mind had changed. Again, the curtain was hanging and whe had little privacy. The other day, when we complained about curtain and noise, we were told (apparently by the owner) that it was normal for people to use our balcony to stage late parties, and subsequently we were asked why we considered that abnomal (maybe sleeping pattenrs are different there). The curtain was never fixed and we had to arrange something ourselves. Nevertheless, It must be said that there was at least a friendly face on staff, who helped me with the issue of my stolen passaport and that breakfast was quite good. We couldn't sleep, though, so it was a major down point.

The best thing was location/price. It's right in the middle of the Museum Dist on Tram/Bus/Canal lines to everywhere. Nightlife was right around the corner too. The place itself is somewhere between a hotel and a hostel. The room I had was clean and included a sink & TV. The bathroom down the hall and the shower down the other hall were both clean too. Breakfast every morning was simple but it hit the spot. My only complaint was the noise...the walls seemed a little thin and I could hear most everything going on outside my room. Nothing a few earplugs didn't solve. I would stay there again.

My fiance and I traveled all over Europe this summer, and this was by far the worst place we stayed. Our room smelled like mildew and the showers were covered with bugs on the ceiling and on the walls. We had read reviews before on the site, but decided to give it a chance. While the staff was nice and friendly and the breakfast was decent, we felt that it was majorly overpriced for an unclean environment.
