First I'd like to say I'm not the kind of person who wants all hotels to be five stars establishments. On the contrary. I like hotels which are modest and charming, but the one thing they should be, is being clean! This hotel was a real nightmare. There were blood stains and sigarette burns on the blankets. The room had a view on a wall covered with pigeon droppings. Television was defect. The carpet came loose on the borders, revaling a whole collection of dirt and dust underneath. Our room was never cleaned during our stay, nor did we get new blankets. Our night lamp was broken on arrival and we had taken the bulb out and put it on the bed to give them a clue the other day it needed replacement. It worked, we got a new light bulb.

We didn't shower during our three day stay, since the shower was a public commodity and smelled nasty. On the brochure we read there were at least three showers on each corridor, we only found one in the entire hotel. Breakfast was simple but good. We got some roasted slices of bread with a boiled egg and only one (1) glass of orange juice. We could choose from jam and a slice of cheese and ham.

The staff itself was warm and welcoming. We did have the impression the owner was getting too old to run this establishement.

When we stayed there, the facade was being renovated (februari 2005). Maybe now the hotel is in much better shape?

We have stayed at the Kooyk Hotel for one night. Location is brilliant, close to the trams, canal boats and the Leidse plein. The place is a bit old and shabby inside but it is great value for money. The owner is wonderful and very helpful. He makes time to give you loads of information and free maps.

We slept at the garden side of the house and it was wonderful and quiet. The room is big, not very modern but all beds had boxsprings. Very comfertable indeed. We had a good sleep, there were 52 people staying but had no noise from them at all.

Breakfast is ok. Muesli, cornflakes, toast, jam and sausage.

We would definately stay again.

Amsterdam is outrageously expense, so we decided to stay at the Kooyk hotel for the weekend for it's price of 80 euros/night. Booked online. Location is right near the Leidesplein and next on the canal near the Americain hotel. Nice quite, location, however, the hotel rooms are pretty funky. The front lady was really nice and gave us a quick rundown of Amersterdam. The rooms were funky- kind of small for 3 people- the triple is a regular room with an extra bed.

The main issue was with our french doors that looked out to the little square. Although, everything looked safe, only one of the bottom bolts would lock. Luckily no one busted in, and we had a good time in Amsterdam. Maids come in during the day and clean the room, so use your discretion on what you leave in the room. Our stuff was fine, but who knows. The beds were not special, but clean sheets. The showers and bathrooms were clean despite the prehistoric Netherlands flushing system, but small bathrooms. Thebreakfast area was nice, and the food decent. Rember only one glass of orange juice per person... Overall- the location would out way the funky rooms if it wasn't for the broken French doors...

  • Liked — location
  • Disliked — problems with french doors locking
  • Tips/Secrets — buy food from grocery stores - amsterdam is a tourist trap with outrageously expensive food!

We paid 55 euro for a friday and saturday night. We wern't expecting the ritz but I was pleastently suprised. The room was big, we had a working tv and the beds were very comfortable. We also had a lovely view of the canal. We were lucky enough to have our room on the floor with the showers on. Which were lovely and warm, sometimes a little too hot!

The breakfast was ok just bread meat and cheese, although on the first day we very nearly missed the breakfast and she was a scary lady telling us we were very late, but a little man still gave us some orange juice and toast so we were happy.

They let you leave your bags in the hotel which was good as our flight was not until 10pm and they ordered a taxi which was only 30 euro.

The location was fantastic and there were many trams which would take you to dam square, but there were loads of resturants and bars within the square. It was not far to walk anywhere although it is cold!

The only drawback to this hotel I would say were the stairs but they are the typical stairs in amsterdam and it did add an element of excitement especially when had a few drinks! Also there was only one key card to a 4 bed room which was a bit rubbish if you got split up.

I would definately stay here again you cant complain for the price we paid and the location was fantastic. It probably isn't the best hotel in the world but I'm sorry people who pay 20 euro a night cant' expect 5* luxury!

We stayed in room 22,the room itself was absolutely disgusting dirty carpets(where there was carpets),the walls and skirting boards were also pretty stinking,as for the rooms facilities, central heating was broken, the tv was broken.the window was broken and to top it all off the lock on the door was broken!when asked to rectify the problems or provide another room they were hopeless and our luggage was left unlocked in the room everytime we went out which was quite often as you couldn't have stayed in there a minute longer than you had to.There wasn't one thing in the room that worked.the beds were the most uncomfortable metal contraptions and the two shared showers and toilet were basically joined onto the room so you could hear every person on your floor going to either. It was the worst room i have stayed in anywhere in the world and the staff were worse than useless.

  • Liked — nothing
  • Disliked — the fact i had booked it in first place

i have stayed in a lot of hotels over the years in Amsterdam. mainly buget ones cos they are cheap. (the best one being the Acro Hotel by the way-& the only one i would return to).

anyways,

the Kooyk was actually ok. i was worried before hand as the room only cost me 20 GBP for the night!! the room i had was a single with shared facilities. it was bigger than some doubles/twins i have stayed in i can tell you (avoid the Quintin England if youre a lone traveller by the way, theirs is a cupboard with no windows!!).
my room at the Kooyk had 2 single beds in, but only one was made up as i was staying on my own.
also had a TV -but it didnt work-i didnt care as it was only for one night.
the window didnt shut, due to the fact a bit of 2 x 4 was wedged in it, so the room was a bit damp also.

despite the above my night was OK :O) you can do a lot lot worse on a budget in Amsterdam. so be carefull & read the reviews on here as they always help me to decide.

breakfast was ok & the staff very friendly too.

many thanks & take it easy all,
wigmund

For the price this was excellent. Clean but basic rooms, very quiet, and a pleasant Dutch breakfast. The owner Mr Moonen is very helpfull and friendly, and the hotel is in a great location. If you are on a restricted budget you cannot do better in central Amsterdam.
