We really liked this hotel. It was very clean and comfortable.
The location was great. I stayed there with my two young teens (one of the other reviews mentions some of the "windows" close by--my kids didn't notice, nor care when I tried to discuss it with them).
The breakfast was substantial enough to keep us going well into the afternoon.
The staff was polite and somewhat helpful (that is where the quirky part comes in).
I have no qualms about recommending this hotel.

We spent 2 nights at the hotel Brouwer in May. We loved this hotel! We walked there in 10 minutes from Centraal station. We were in (I think) the Escher room - a large room in the very top of the hotel, with a big bathroom. The hotel is quaintly crooked, walking around the floor for the first time you feel like you are drunk! We had the most fabulous views of the Singel Canal (and beyond) from our top floor windows. The hotel has a spiral staircase, but being on the top floor, we stuck to the tiny lift (do not attempt to fit more than 2 people and a suitcase in this unless on very intimate terms!). They offer free internet access. The breakfasts are great, served in the lovely front ground floor room, and the manageress, Ellen, is a charmingly laid-back lady who was very friendly and helpful. Warning: do not pull the ears of the dear resident dog when patting her - she does not like it! We booked about 10 months in advance, knowing how few rooms the hotel has, and are very glad that we did.

Based on reviews from this site, I booked the Brouwer way back in November, and I was glad I did. It is a short walk to and from Amsterdam Centraal Station and so was convenient for coming and going from the city. It is right near Dam Square and is about a 15 minute walk from the Museum Plein, Anne Frank House, etc...we walked everywhere from here easily. They had a nice breakfast that was not a buffet, but rather was served to you. It included bread and a soft boiled egg. The rooms are accessed by a narrow spiral stair case (or small lift) and the hallways and narrow, but slope and lean wonderfully. It felt so authentic staying here. We had the Breitner room and it was great---canal views. There are a few places to eat literally steps away as well. If you want to stay in an authentic canal house with just enough classy amenities, then this is your place.

Perfect.
Perfect location, good value, super charming building and rooms, very helpful and friendly staff/owners, right on a canal, great breakfast in a delightful room.......I have no complaints.
It is a very short walk from the train station, so it is easy to get to and from the trains and the airport.
I have stayed there twice.
Highly recommended.

We loved this place and the location was perfect. Walked to the hotel in 8 minutes from the train station. Place was clean, free internet, great coffee, and wonderful staff. We did wonder when booked as they kept telling us they were full, we just kept emailing and finally ended up with three nights each for two couples, so don't be put off by the first no. I think they are selective. Stairs and lift are small and steep. But I would go back in a minute.

We (2 straight couples 40-ish) returned this week from a great stay at the Hotel Brouwer. We booked directly with the hotel for E95 per double room a night. The hotel is in a nice location, easy walking distance to most places.
Saturday night was a bit noisy outside, lots of beeping horns from somewhere. Husband struggled to get a decent nights sleep, but my earplugs saved the day!! Don’t let this put you off, we would return here like a shot.
Friendly staff, good breakfast, right on the canal. A nice café (Greenwood) about 20m away. Local pub about 50m other direction. Some girls in windows nearby, but more interesting than worrying.
The Moeders restaurant at Rozengracht 251 we highly recommend and takes about 20-25 minutes to walk from the Broewer. Lots of other establishments nearby for food, drink and a smoke if you like! For a cheap tasty lunch, try a Wok to Walk – E7 – lovely, there are a few around the city.
Have a great time.

Just returned back from the Brouwer and thought I'd write a few comments. Party of two couples all in our late fourties. The hotel is exactly what you would expect from this part of Amsterdam.....it's charming, very clean........... close enough to the night life but certainly not to busy, yes, sure there are girls in the windows close by but isn't that what you would have expected. We had a good walk round and we thought this area was by far the nicest, busy if you wanted it and laid back if that's what you wanted. I can certainly reccommend this hotel and this part of Amsterdam........would I go back ????? of course.... in a flash, pardon the pun.
