“Perfect Ambience.”
Reviewed 23 January 2009

So much has been written about Hotel Brouwer, most of it rightly very positive, so I won't repeat it all. However, one or two recent reviews are a bit mealy-mouthed about this gorgeous, little canal house and I wanted to set the record straight!

The main thing that some of the recent reviewers do not seem to appreciate, is that the hotel is decorated in simple, period style. It is deliberate! It is not "basic" but absolutely beautiful. The decor is such a joy.

The bedrooms are beautifully tranquil, with their wooden floors and beautifully simple wooden furniture - upright chairs, charming wooden table, lovely Shaker-style wardrobe and so on. The beds are sweet and simple, the ben-linen white cotton with broderie anglaise or fine white decoration - and very frequently changed. Yet, the modern touches are there - a small flat-screen tv on a wall, a stylish metal floor lamp, metallic bedside lamps.

The rest of the hotel is postcard pretty - it IS like being inside a Dutch interior! The breakfasts are delicious and everything on the table is stylish and lovely. Such care has been taken to give guests a perfect impression.

The staff are great and really friendly - it IS like being in a home, especially in the morning - and having free internet access by the dining area is brilliant.

I have gone on a bit but I SO wanted all you readers to go ahead and book this place - in advance, because it is VERY popular! Truly, you will be charmed as we were. We cannot recommend it highly enough!

  • Liked — Everything. The period style decor, particularly.
  • Disliked — Zilch.

Excellent location, charming canal house, spotlessly clean and with the friendliest of hosts. What more could you want?

I'll definitely be telling friends and family about this gem of a hotel which is situated on the Singel canal overlooking one of the beautiful bridges. You'll not need a tram, bus or metro pass from here as the major sights are all within walking distance and walking in Amsterdam is great.

The substantial continental breakfast with wonderful coffee set me up for much of the day - so that I could enjoy all Amsterdam's wonderful museums, sights and happenings.

Cannot wait to revisit this wonderful hotel.

Other people wrote everything about this hotel. So, I only can repet it's perfet for the centrality (five minuts walk from the Station or dam square). The tram (number 2 - 9 - 5 for going to Ledseplein, museumplein, Rembrandtplein) is just to the end of the litlle street. The hotel is very close to Anne Frank house, to the best important shopping streets, and the view over the singel canal, that it enjoys from the windows, is fantastic. The hotel is very familiar, does not seem to be in a hotel but at our home. The bed room (we were in the Veermer room) is very clean and the the breakfast room is romantic. The breakfast is right and the price very cheap. Although the hotel is in a small red light area, it's a very quiet area. We were three fifties ladies but we have not heard ever in danger. the owners are very willing. Near the hotel there is the famous Pankake Bakery (very good pankake).
So, the most quality of the hotel are:
cheap, clean, centrally located and romantic atmosphere.

Read all the TA reviews before going but was still a little apprehensive until arrival. The website and photo's no way do this lovely wee hotel the justice it deserves. We stayed in the Rembrandt room and the views over the Singel Canel were a joy to wake up to. It is fabulous and the staff are so friendly. Breakfast was a delight every morning in the quaint breakfast room as were the chats with the lovely hostess and the other guests. Hotel Brouwer is faultless and we will never stay anywhere else now. Best value for money, spotlessly clean and most of all, fantastic location. "Amsterdam's Best Kept Secret!" 11/10

Great hotel in a very convenient and quiet setting. Super clean room and entire building. Stayed on top floor (Escher room) and the stairs are a bit dizzying but there is a small lift. Great views of canal from every room. Breakfast served was excellent and hostess was very friendly. Very traditional canalhouse with 8 rooms and right on the Singel canal. 2 minutes walk to Damrak and less than 10 to Central Station. Also walking distance to Anne Frank House (10 minutes), Van Gogh Museum (30ish minutes), and everything else you could want/need. Convenient restaurants, bars, and coffeeshops within one minute of hotel. Free internet also a bonus. Excellent choice in Amsterdam and for the rate of 95 Euro I don't think you could do much better.

I have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Brouwer having booked it based on the reviews on Tripadvisor and my limited knowledge of Amsterdam. It is in a great location on the Singel canal near to all the attractions and some good bars and restaurants nearby. The room we had was on the second floor and was spacious and clean with views over the canal. The breakfast was fine and staff seemed friendly.
Unfortunately the two single beds were short and narrow – not great if you are over 6ft. Our first night was a Saturday and it was extremely noisy into the early hours with shouting from drunks passing by and smashing bottles at one point. The windows are not double-glazed and as it is an old building they do not fit terribly well (I had to wedge one closed to stop it rattling during the night) so noise is going to be a problem because of its location. One window had no curtain and just a bit of gauze pinned over it which didn’t look great. Between the street noise and small beds I didn’t get a good night sleep during my 3 nights so can only give a neutral rating.
