Very lovely hotel, very close to the museum area and just off one of the main walking streets/tram/etc. Excellent service - cannot say enough for the personal service at this small boutique hotel. Very much a home feeling.

We stayed in the Shakespeare Room...lovely - great bed, lots of room for 2 - have bf in bed or downstairs in the dining room - freshfruit, breads, and even enough leftovers for a small sandwich snack later in the day during your travels. A mix of guest, from businesspeople, tourists, etc. A couple of great rooms for meetings, get together, etc in the front - if you were there on business, get-togethers, etc.

On one of the evenings, they had some trouble with guests (with adjoining rooms) that were moving back and forth (a little heavy-footed) early in the morning. Because of the style of the hotel/house, it did interrupt our sleep a bit, but both the manager and their staff apologized profusely for the unexpected noise at the morning breakfast.

Before going, I had read another review, which mentioned the a/c not working. Fortunately the 4-days we were in Amsterdam, were not too hot, and we didn't really need it. They supplied a fan, which was more than adequate for the temperature, and put in window screens so that we could open the windows, if we wanted.

The lack of A/C did not affect our enjoyment of our stay, but if the weather had been warmer, this review could have been much different. Hopefully, they fix it sooner rather than later.

All in all, we were very satisfied with the hotel, with the location, great personal service, and home feeling, we would definitely stay again. I would check to make sure the a/c is fixed if going in the summer.....

We rented bikes (Mike's - just around the block) for a couple days - should have rented from the start - but we loved the walking/biking/cafe lifestyle of the Dutch... great place to visit.

The management and staff of this hotel have it down exactly right. From a delicious breakfast in the morning to wine and cheese and other delights in the afternoon, everyone at the hotel puts extraordinary care in making sure that the guests are extremely well attended. Internet service was included at no additional cost.
Amsterdam is a beautiful city and when one combines the visit with at stay at the Hotel Seven One Seven......how can I not return.

I spent 3 nights camping just outside Amsterdam and was looking forward to 2 nights of luxury, this place did not disappoint. The hotel is beautifully furnished in a unique way, feels very homely and posh at the same time. The room was very comfortable, lovely furnishings and antiques. The TV was great, although we didn't watch a lot of it.
We had complimentary wine, beer and nibbles, the nibbles even included steak tartar, which was a first! The service was great and the staff helpful. We stayed in the room at the top and we loved it.
It was not without a couple of problems. Firstly it was not quite as clean as i would have hoped, the bedding was spotless but the walls where a bit grubby and the ceiling in the room above the bed had an access hole to the loft and it was surrounded with dirty hand-prints, not too much of a problem but when you are lying in bed you cant help but stare at it.
The hairdryer in the bathroom was poor and the air conditioner was so noisy we had to turn it off, but we were not allowed the remote for it so we had to ask someone to change the settings on it, which was a bit odd.
Overall it was an excellent place to stay and the location was perfect.

every time we go to Amsterdam (once a year on average), we stay in 717. Their staff is courteous, and helpful. There are only a handful of rooms so each guest is treated with personalised attention. And we love the interior design of each room. It's central location is also a huge perk.

I stayed here for 5 nights, in the Tolkien Suite at the rear of the house. The suite was a real gem, with antiques and a quiet ambience away from the noisy canal (especially important as the Dutch team was winning during the World Cup!). The room was true to its depiction on their website. Common rooms were elegant and beautifully decorated. My VIP treatment started right from check-in when I was asked to wait in the beautiful sitting room and drinks were provided while my luggage was hauled up the narrow stairs to my suite by an able assistant manager. All my requests were met with efficiency and punctuality, incl. a generous breakfast in my room each morning, afternoon wine and snacks, and extra amenities. I have not stayed in a nicer, more friendly "hotel" (I use quotation marks because this is not your typical luxury hotel, but a unique guest house that really is a home away from home). The house even provided guests with mosquito-repellent spray, which was useful being next to the canal during the hottest days of the summer. My only suggestion for improving this stellar property is to boost the power of the air conditioning units, particularly during the hot July month. It was barely adequate for the hottest days during my stay. Still, I will return here for future visits. Bravo to the management and staff.

After reading all the wonderful reviews here I booked two nights at the 717. While the location is amazing, the room (Mahler) wonderful and the general service realtively good, our trip was unfortunately ruined by the rather unbelievable behaviour of the female manager: This was the hottest weekend of the year so far and I especially went to 717 and did not stay on a houseboat in order to profit from the airconditioning in the rooms (not a given in Amsterdam). When returning to the hotel after dinner, the AC had been switched off and our remote control was missing. I called the concierge and he told me he was very sorry but the manager had asked him to take the remote away and not give it back as we should sleep with open windows -- it was over 30 degrees in the room even with windows open plus no mosquito mesh in front of windows and so mosquito attacks all night long, passed terrible night and when asking for explanation of this policy in the morning no answer was forthcoming. We felt as if we were treated like children that mustn't play with the gadgets at night...at 350 euros a night, outrageous behaviour! The dutch are often caricatured for their stingyness, and I can't but wonder whether the 'no AC at night policy' is indeed part of this myth?
