“hostel rather than hotel”
Reviewed 13 February 2013

We stayed for one night in Feb, the room was really basic but clean and alright if you just need it for sleeping in. As for breakfast, I wouldn't even go there, 6 Euros for sitting in a dingy room where you have to make your own with not a lot of choice! Walls were thin so you can hear people coming in and out but its in a good location with not a lot of outside noise. Wouldn't stay there for longer than one night, but you really do get what you pay for.

I have to say that I was really disappointed with this hotel. At first it looked okay even though I am usually unwilling to stay in cheap hotels. The four of us had booked a room equipped with an own bathroom. There were two separate beds and one bunk bed. The beds were fine: clean linen and soft matrasses. The bathroom was okay but it could use some renewal and maybe a decent mirror.

The worst were the mice in the room. At 4 am we went to the reception to complain about the problem. The receptionist did not take us seriously but eventually we got a new room that was slightly better than the previous one. Although the mice were gone, there was a lot of noise (loud music, people running around etc.) that kept us from sleeping.

In short, the hotel could certainly use some thorough cleansing! I certainly do not recommend it even though the location was quite good.

woooohooo.... never seen such a lousy guest room before, it was one of the cheapest locations in Amsterdam when, 2 friends and me where there for a weekend trip.

Check-in was fast, for sleeping it was ok, almost no noise from neighbours, but no cupboard, no spring in the room, small toilet under the stairway on each floor.
it is ok for backpackers with low money, and if you are just on a booze-cruise with low standards.
as we spent most time out of the room, and were just for sleeping there, we decided to get drunk to forget about the room.

We stayed in this hotel because it was cheap. It was only after I booked had I seen the bad reviews. It was three of us in a triple room. At first its a basic room and we are travellers so we only really used to room to sleep at night. The bathroom and shower room is clean, however one night when i was dying for the toilet I did have to walk two floors down because the one next to us had urine all over it. The shower is very clean and our room and sheets were too. So all these reviews about bed bugs is lies. One thing i was extremely dissapointed about was the WIFI which is not stated on the website that is unavaliable everywhere EXCEPT the hotel lobby. So no WIFI in the rooms. On the second night my friend was in the single bed and her bed leg broke, it was already broken but had been glued back together. We informed he front desk and nothing was done about it for the next two nights. The staff are ok. When i confronted the man about not having WIFI when it clearly states there is WIFI in the rooms he didnt care at all and said I can take it up with the manager. He did make up for it when he recomended some good coffee shops nearby. Another bad point is we were on the FOURTH floor and there isnt a lift so dont bring alot of baggage. The stairs are extremely steep, if you are intoxicated it would be dangerous! All in all for what we paid it was decent and did the job especially for the location and the coffeeshop opposite.

Room Tip: Before paying, make sure to ask for a room thats not on the 4th floor and maybe ask to see the room...

Upon arrival we were greeted by a building covered by graffiti, and were nervous to realise that it was our hotel, it took an hour to check in as we had to pay a 15% charge for paying for hotel with our card, I mean seriously were we all meant to turn up with £900 cash to pay??? Ridiculous!!
Then we climbed the quite frankly dangerous stairs due to broken banister to our bedroom that resembled a prison cell, tiny, the window wouldnt close it was held open by wood, the window was cracked and had furry mould growing from the top of it!!!! I love this city but hotels like the Marnix should be closed down, absoloutely rank, the pits of Amsterdam. The only positive was the wee coffee shop accross the road!!

We stayed there for 3 nights for NYE '13. The service was served with an attitude by some snobby guys who thought the Marnix was The Ritz!!! It was 60 quid a night per person but the hotel was a total dump. No toilet/TV. The lights were broke and the room was cold - lack of a proper fitting window. You can't smoke in the hotel either and the vending machine is 2 euros for everything which is again a rip off. The entire place is a dive and is a hostel and NOT a hotel! Don't be ripped off by the smug buggers!
