Its a good 'introduction' to impressionist paintings - showing the pre- and post phases as well. Tekst (in Dutch and English) take the visitor through time and painters - giving interesting background you may wish to follow up at home. With just two floors - and a fixed route - the exhibition is not as exhausting as some other museums can be. And ... of course ... there are some great paintings on display!

For those who can't get to St.Petersburg the Hermitage there has established a small branch in Amsterdam. This will give you an excellent sample of the greatness of the Russian collection. We attended a show on Impressionism that contained many fine examples and also placed the art in the context of its artistic era. For such a wonderful exhibition we didn't have to worry about buying tickets for a specific time slot. As we only had a three day stay in Amsterdam this was a huge plus. For jewellery lovers the gallery store has a fine selection of contemporary Dutch work.

We loved the exhibit, "Impressionists" we saw at the Hermitage-Amsterdam. We had no idea that there was a 'branch' Hermitage outside of Russia, so this came as a big surprise to us. The fact that the current exhibit of Impressionists (pre- and post-) from the Hermitage collection was terrifically curated and mounted, was a delightful surprise. To see so many great works of art that are now in St Petersburg, was wonderful. The Hermitage-Amsterdam museum building itself is a work of art, having been brilliantly re-done by a team of superb architects. The restaurant there is also superb: delicious food, soothing, sleek atmosphere and wonderfully restorative after an art experience!

Even though this exhibit is VERY small, it is certainly worth the time. best to see it on a Holland Pass, the 14euros was one of the most expensive and size of exhibition was certainly the smallest.....

Overall the museum experience was very nice, the building itself is of significant importance and has been restored beautifully to accommodate the museum. My favorite part was the mini exhibition on the Russian Hermitage museum, including the floor plans of said museum. I thought it was a great little touch.
