This gorgeous building, until recently an old peoples home overlooking the Amstel river, near the Jewish museums, Waterlooplein market and Botanical Gardens, has temporary exhibitions so it depends whether you are interested in what is showing. I saw the Gaugin and contemporaries exhibition a few months back which was full of treasures but not many Gaugins! On a walk to the Hermitage from the flower market make sure to drop by Puccini, an exquisite handmade chocolate shop in a typical small street but look out for the bicycles whizzing through and stay on the pavements!

This is a joint venture with the Hermitage from St Petersburg, Russia. the current exhibit is "The Silk Road. The curators have done a great job of explaining the history of this trade route between Asia and Europe. The exhibit includes many artifacts that Russian archeologists have uncovered in the different cities that line this route. The building is also very interesting as it is a restored women's shelter for the 18th century. It is not well publicized but should not be missed.

The Silk Road exhibition which I saw was a showing of ancient archaeological finds along the Silk Road to China. Interesting to start with, but I'm afraid once I've seen a few murals hacked from their wall and reconstructed and conserved, it can become a little wearisome. The academic learning behind it is not disputed - but it would be lovely to see some of the gems from the magnificent paintings collection at the St Petersburg Hermitage that is out of reach for so many people living in NW Europe.

The Hermitage only has temporary exhibitions, on loan from their Russian 'parent' museum. This one was wonderful and included original wall paintings from central Asia which had never been outside Russia before. Also a nice shop and good restaurant/cafe.
