“A pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2013

After a mediocre dining experience on the Museumplein earlier in the day, we needed something to eat before leaving Amsterdam by train from the Central Station nearby to the De Kroonprins Cafe (Grand Cafe de Kroonprins on the sign).

A normal traditional cafe with a large outdoor dining area (rather exposed but it was nice and sunny), the waiter was helpful, friendly and prompt and we ordered what we thought would be quite small dishes.

When the food arrived we were pleasantly surprised. I'd ordered a ham baguette and expected just that - but it came with an enormous salad (I wasn't in a salad type of mood but it proved so tasty that I ate it anyway). My wife enjoyed her serving of dessert too - including fresh strawberries.

A nice convenient place for a meal - especially when the Central Station seems to be a construction site at the moment.

“Old world charm and fine food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

This is a small and cosy spot which is filled with artifacts, it was empty when we arrived rather late in the evening.
We were concerned that we may have left it too late to eat, but no, this amazing little restaurant gave us a meal to remember, the tasting plate was varied and great value, my steak was delicious and my wife's crumbed camembert was perfect.
We would certainly visit again, this is a little treasure that could easily be overlooked.

Finally nice clean facilities, reached by a genuine Amsterdam twisting narrow stairway!

“No Atmosphere, but good food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2013

This restaurant is in the middle of the tourist area so it draws people walking down the street. We had a table where the door opened & hit my chair each time someone entered. Not a very appealing atmosphere and feel inside, but I must admit the food was better than I expected after sitting down. Not a place to go for a cozy dinner, but not bad if you’re just out to eat. I would recommend this as long as you understand what you are getting.

“It was open at 7 am”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2013

We took the tram into Amsterdam and arrived so early that this place was all that was open. We entered to find that the only thing they would sell us was the breakfast buffet for almost 10Euro per person. Apparently they make exceptions for some people because the receipt left on the table indicated that just a few minutes before I arrived, someone had 2 coffees and toast during "buffet only" time. Despite the questionable favoritism for the previous customer, we stayed and ate. The food was your average European breakfast buffet with cold meats, scrambled eggs, fruit, coffee, etc. The waitress who eventually came round to clear tables spoke excellent English and was very nice unlike the brusque "ladies" who greeted us when we arrived. Only other issue we had was no lights down the stairs to or in the actual bathrooms. If it's 7 am and everything else is closed, come on in and eat. If you have other choices, maybe you get lucky and find something better because for this place you will get an average breakfast.

“Lovely friendly atmosphere and surroundings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

We stopped into De Kroonprins with our 2 children for some lunch on a busy Saturday. There was a lovely circle table of 6 for us all. The waitress was very friendly and answered any questions we had about the menu, as we had only arrived in Amsterdam the day before. The waitress also gave our 2 children a little pocket toy which they were overjoyed with. We had cheese toasties, and pancakes with banana...all delicious.
