My wife and I wanted to take a mini-vacation to Amsterdam and surrounding cities. I found this place online at an affordable cost. I knew it was a 2 star but what we got for those two stars was worse than a Hostel. The Hotel was under major renovations which were not mentioned on their website at all. We got to the room itself and it looked as if it needed to be fixed up as well, they tried to paint over the bathroom windows to make them non see through, you could still see outside, it made showering a little awkward. The first morning we were awoken by drilling and hammering at 8am! There were no amenities at all. We went in February when the weather is still fairly cold. We were shocked that there was no heat in the bathroom. Anytime we wanted to go in their we had to prepare ourselves to be freezing. We though about leaving the door open and letting the heat from the bedroom in, but decided against it just in case it made the warm room, cold. They did offer a free breakfast, which was mediocre. Typical Dutch, meat, cheese, bread. The TV in the room was barely watchable, every station came in fuzzy. One morning I went down and they had the coffee still out, it was around 11, an hour after the breakfast ended. My wife had gone down a few minutes before hand and got some coffee. When I went to pour myself a cup they said that it would be 1.75. I told them they can keep their coffee. It was pot brewed coffee and from that morning. Their was no sign near it stating that it cost money also. I thought with as much of an convince the construction is, they should be bending over backwards to please their customers. I will never visit this Hotel again, and encourage people to stay away from The City Hotel, Amsterdam.
located nearby the central station, and in a veru central position this hotel was a very very good surprise.
People are vey kind, it is clean and quiet.
Room are modern ( at least mine) breackfast not vet huge but enought.
ratio price/ quality very very good.
i will come back on my next visit to the city.
hotel is perfect , workers are kind and good people rooms are confortable. the location of hotel is really good. you can walk everywhere and u can find ewerything around the hotel shops restaurants coffee shop smoking areas places for breakfast etc....
The hotel is very close to the train station, just a few minutes walk and very easy to find. The place is quiet at night so you can get a good night's sleep. You can visit the main attractions of the center on foot and the red light district is very close so this is very practical when returning at night. For the museums that are a bit far away (Rijksmuseum, van Gogh museum, etc) you can catch the tram in front of the train station.
The rooms are small and I noticed that there was no elevator, I stayed at the ground floor but if that wasn't the case, heavy luggage might have been a problem. Although the room was on the ground floor, the ceiling made it look like an attic. However, it was warm and, in combination with the thick blanket, we recovered from the cold weather in Amsterdam. Staff was polite. The lobby is used as breakfast room and there is also free wifi there (but not in the rooms). Breakfast had just a few options but I can't say it was bad.
In conclusion, I think that the price was good and the location was practical. If you are not looking for a fancy hotel, this is a good choice.
