Seeing the devices was pretty cool. Although, the displays were dusty and very unkempt. Not worth the 20 minutes you spend there unless you pay under 5 Euros! Plus it would have been nice if a display or two allowed you get into it for a photo opp.

“Not worth it”
Reviewed 11 June 2014 via mobile

Decided to fill in some time and check out this museum. For €15 the two of us walked through the whole thing in under 15 mins. Some of the instruments were interesting but it was very dark and we struggled to read the info on each piece. Wasn't very long either. Don't bother

“If you like to be tortured yourself…”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We went there to learn about the dark ages and their horrific torture instruments but instead of that, we learned how the museum tortures their customers with their lack of interactivity. If there were some instruments exposed, it was accompanied with fake old papyrus who were falling out of their cases and was even duct taped. The instruments always came with a sign ‘DO NOT TOUCH’.

It was a total disappointment. In almost 10 minutes, we’ve seen the place. If my boyfriend wouldn’t have to go to the bathroom, it would be 5 minutes.
Ok, 7 euros isn't much, but it's way too much spent on an 'attraction' like this.
Unbelievable a place like that isn’t still declared bankrupt or burned down with a torch!

“Torture museum honors its own name - and not in the good way”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Where to start, first of all, how can one not be interested in visiting a torture museum. Especially if it's located in the center of Amsterdam and the tickets only cost 7 €'s, but what a torture it was.

First of all the museum itself could date back to the middle ages, there is no interactivity whatsoever. The actual examples of torture devices are dull, poorly made and incomplete. Accompanied by poorly lighted texts on the walls, which were horribly written and sometimes even misplaced. When no physical torture tool was displayed, about 95 % of the time and the museum isn't even that big, there was an A3 leaflet showing the actual torture device.

Rest assured that this leaflet wasn't even clear, a quick copy from internet, or who knows where they got it. I might have made a mistake in telling that there was no interactivity, as most of the pictures didn't even seem to match the corresponding texts, where we supposed to match them?

Also the museum itself is just filthy (and not by design or intent), and very small. Couples who like to get inspired for some home made torturing, couldn't even be alone and have a giggle or two.

I was contemplating about torturing the owners for their lack of effort, knowledge and well basic funding for a museum, but the only thing in the whole museum that could do some torturing, was the paper posters on the wall, but judging on the quality of everything, even that couldn't gave a papercut.

One might argue that nowadays not much can be bought for 14 € a couple, but since wikipedia is free and offers substantial more information, you could buy some wood and spikes, lay them on the floor and be atleast more educated then walking out of this museum. A big NO.
