The Alexander is a well-located hotel in one of the old buildings in town, meaning that it is a narrow and tall place. This also applies to the rooms which are narrow and tall, do not expect a lot of extra space. This is common for all such hotels though.
I stayed in room 15 which was unfortunately situated directly off the stairwell, and the stairs are very noisy. Also all the noise from the lobby carried up through the thin door, making this more like a hostel experience in that regard. Earplugs were a must.
The room was basically clean, but was starting to show its age. Especially the grouting in the shower would need replacing.
Like almost all Amsterdam hotels, the Alexander is overpriced and overrated for what it actually offers, and it would not be ranked as a three star establishment for example in the Nordic countries.
With these things things in mind, it is still a recommendable hotel thanks to its location, the fair service and the acceptable quality of its rooms. Just make sure you reserve yours high up and away from the stairwell.
A great hotel for a short City Break in Amsterdam.
Boiling Hot Shower, clean towels changed every day and bathroom was immaculate.
The bedroom was big enough for 2 friends to be in without feeling tight - you could walk all the way around the bed, there were 2 chairs and a small wardrobe too.
We found some english music channels on the TV! The beds were made daily and the sheets and linen was very clean when we arrived.
Great service on the desk - gave us maps / lent an adapter plug for an hour as I'd forgotten mine for my straighteners!
Brilliant location - about 5 mins walk to the Van Gogh Museum and good tram links when we arrives / left to get to the Central Station.
5 mins walk from some bars and cafes for breakfast and/or evening cocktails, brilliant location for walking around the city centre.
I'd absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone going for a short city break. Well done!
Just got back from a weekend in Amsterdam with 2 friends and would definitely recommend the Alexander Hotel. The room was lovely, we had a triple room which was number 7. It was really spacious and clean, and the beds were lovely. The receptionist was so helpful and let us leave our bags there before check in. Breakfast was the nicest continental breakfast i have had, things like hot drinks, juice cereals, cake, eggs, bread hot croissants and hot cross buns and fruit. The location was perfect and was so easy to find, id recommend getting the tram 1,2 or 5 to leidesplein and its 5mins walk from there but once you've found you bearings you can easily walk everywhere. would definitely come back!!! :)
We stayed at the Alexander Hotel for one night in February. It was easy to find and is in a great location for visiting the museums nearby. Staff were attentive and friendly and the room was clean and tidy. The continental breakfast was fairly good with a selection of bread rolls, croissants, jams etc., meats, eggs, cereals and tea and coffee. If you're after somewhere that's comfortable and affordable then you can't go wrong with the Alexander Hotel.
