Stopped at the inconspicuous little Broodbakker Simon Meijssen (Nieuwe Vijzelstraat 5) on the way to the Rijksmuseum for a quick breakfast of the most amazing ham and gouda croissants, and sat to eat them in the Weteringplantsoen, contemplating whether to walk back and get a few more.

We stumbled upon this bakery by chance. Glad we did else we wouldn't have tasted the delicious treats! The coconut macaroons were divine.

Probably it is the combination of the strategic location, the welcoming atmosphere, the open and light shop and the large selection of Bread varieties that accounts for the popularity of this bakkerij (one r). But otherwise it is a baker like there are many in Amsterdam, and even better ones. To name Vlaamsch Broodhuys on Constantijn Huygensstraat, Rud Veenekamp on Ferdinand Bolstraat, Paul Annee in the '9 streets', and many more. Simon Meijssen is a chainstore, like is Van Muyden, all just bakers with delicious breaks, croissants, wholeweat, often also organic. Enjoy it when in Holland. the Dutch have two bread meals a day, so they have to be choosy on Bread.

Coffee, kaasuiebroodjie (roll with cheese and onion on top) and walnut tart. Good coffee, fresh bread, excellent tart and a place to eat while admiring the wonderful art nouveau tiling before heading onto Museumplein - friendly staff
