On my last visit to amsterdam a few years ago, I found this a great place to escape the wintry cold and enjoy some pea and ham soup, along with rather exotic looking desserts - this visit it was crowded with weary christmas shoppers but very pleasant just the same

This is the most upscale department store in Holland. Like Bergman's in New York they have a high quality , albeit buffet, restaurant on the top floor. We eat there often because the food is always at least good and the atmosphere is , although not evocative of old Europe, quite nice. Lunch is the best deal. If you are around Dam Square and hungry give it a try!

Whenever I am in Amsterdam, I am going to the Beijenkorf restaurant to have lunch or drinks. Why I go into a department-store for food? The atmosphere is cozy, you can have an intimate talk or drink without loads of tourist noise around. The food is freshly made, in front of you, and the dishes look great, and there is minimal waiting time. Final advantage: it is 15 minutes walking from the central station, so you can sit out your time while waiting for the train.

As far as deparment store restaurants go, this one has to be among the best. It is clean and simple overlooking Dam Square. The department store was having it's annual three crazy days sale so there was a very talented cellist playing during lunch. The smoked salmon wrap was very good and not too heavy (which was good since we were eating late). The espresso was good too... All in all, a fine place I thought.
