We had to stay at this hotel for a week. Ended up in the 1 star room with a shared bathroom. These are awful! There was a horrible smell in the room. One of the staff just let themselves into the room one night thinking it was empty. That was quite frightening. There was an art exhibition on in the room across the hall. The staff were moving around furniture in the middle of the night with no concern for guests.
The only good thing I can say is that the beds were clean.

We booked 2 rooms for our stay at the Lloyd, 4th floor room 409, next door to the shared bathroom, bit noisy but ok. however the shared bathroom was really that, I walked in on a guy sitting doing his business on the loo with the door wide open. I did risk taking a shower when it seemed quite, they were in need of a good scrub & a refurb. No tea & coffee in room but in the hallway, ask cause you'll never find it other wise.
The bed was comfortable & clean.
Room on the 5th floor had tiny window you would need to stand on a chair to look out. they did have private bathrooms on the landing, I did start using these instead of the 4th floor ones.
Staff seemed friendly & helpful.

Room Tip: Make sure you get one with a bathroom.

Other reviews already pointed out some of the unusual features of this hotel, which is located on the quiet water front close to the cruise ship terminal, an ideal location for an overnight stay before and after the cruise. The staff was friendly & helpful. Internet in the room was free and worked without any problem. The restaurant downstairs, with a good choice of wine by the glass, served tasty but pricey meals. However, there are several restaurants, grocery stores and deli shops in the neighbourhood frequented by the locals. One fish shop in the mall down the street, with a long queue at lunch hour, served a variety of seafood take-outs at reasonable prices, and the herring I tried that day was probably as good as it can be. For those who are health conscious, a morning stroll/jog along the water front would definitely help to kick off the day in the right mood.

We found this hotel by chance using lastminute.com's "Secret Hotel" feature. The hotel is a 20-30 min walk at a brisk pace from the central train station, so use the #26 tram or a taxi if you don't have running shoes or hiking boots.

Once you arrive you will see that this hotel doesn't fall into the 'conventional' category. Being a former youth penitentiary it has an odd design, more like a large boarding house, but it has been adapted quite nicely. For our 2 nght stay we used the hotel restaurant a few times and can recommend it.

There were 2 of us staying in separate rooms, namely "Superior Double/Twin". It seems that it can be a bit hit and miss with the kind of room you get, mine (#114) was very comfortable, a studio type design, but my travelling buddy had a narrow space (#118) with an odd bathroom where a squeegee was kindly supplied to mop up after showering, due to the shower being quite close to the toilet.

But overall I enjoyed my stay at the Lloyd Hotel and would consider staying there again. I would ask for a room on a higher floor and would come in a warmer season.

I don't know why I came back here a second time as it confirms what I felt the 1st time. The concept is nice on paper : the hotel offers rooms from 1 to 5 stars. But the problem is that the quality is not there. Rooms seems to have been designed by graduated students as part of their school project. It's very inconvenient and unfriendly. So you pay for a 3 stars but you have the service of a 2 stars (no hair dryer, poor tv, no safety box, cheap furniture…)
Despite the nice restaurant room, the food is very common and choice is quite reduced to have a proper dinner. So all in all it's not a good value for money, and set apart from the center. Also bad experience when I discover that breakfast was not included (they didn't said or write when I ordered) so I paid 17,5EUR for a coffee and a bowl of flakes…
Good point though is the free wifi and the staff nice (more at the bar than reception though)

This place is not for the faint-hearted whom has a fix idea what bathroom, bed room, toilets, hotel rooms suppose to be. Lloyd hotel is a building with an interesting history - ex detention centre, ex immigrants' centre etc - you need to really see for yourself to appreciate how brilliantly interior designers/architects turn this institution, almost hospital-like architecture to a Hotel.
I chose a 3 star room, in the basement , although I am a frequent traveller, it took me about 10 mins to orientate myself in the room and realize how my prior concepts about how rooms should be is rather strong. There are no doors for the toilet and shower (a forest shower) which is both seperated by a wall. The shower 'room' or more like compartment is so massive , it can fit 10 people easily. Room is extremely clean, and the bed I have to say has the most comfortable duvet and mattress i have ever slept in!!! I love the duvet so much I almost bought a Llyod Hotel design duvet .... I kinda regret not having at least the pillow case....

The uniqueness of the bed placement translates to comfort and privacy (huge contrast to the openess of the bathroom)- king size bed fitted snugly into a what looks like a cubic cove in the room - with the walls of the cove painted bright yellow - creating a funky contrast to the contemporary grey walls and wardrobes in the rest of the room....

Would I come back again? a definite YES - a mere 10 min train ride away from town, comfortable beds and clean rooms, the never boring interior design filled with character.
Although there is occasional frustration as there are usually only 1 person serving a few at the reception - but hey, you are in Amsterdam - what's the rush for? :)

Room Tip: I didnt ask to to view the room before hand - so it took me by surprise - but pleasantly - you might...

First we've been disappointed how far away from the train station the hotel is until we found out that by car it takes longer to get there than by bike. Our room was great and I cant stop thinking about the bed and linen. Just the best and I slept like a baby.
Breakfast isn't cheap but oh so yummy and the ambient just great. I took so many pictures and will recommend it to everyone.
The hotel is renting out bikes, it's so easy to get around on a bike.

Room Tip: Maybe take one with a bathroom
