Old builing, trendy style. Only 5 minutes with the tram to the city. Good parking, breakfast. More for business than pleasure. Good value!

Have just returned from a 2 night break in this hotel. The hotel is as everybody states different. Booking in was slow but the receptionist was very polite and helpful. Our first room (116) 3* would have been lovely but unfortunately the shower/bathroom was being refurbished so was out of action e.g. no tiles or shower base but it was quite large and sunny and being on the corner overlooked the canal. When we explained to the receptionist that it would be nice when it was finished she was almost disbelieving and we were asked to wait in the bar area for it to be checked. The hotel was very busy with several conferences so I think their may have been a problem with finding us another room! We were however, given 2 free drinks and then another room 502. This was no where near as nice as the first – more 2* standard, the wet room was dark and municipal looking, but the bed was very comfy. The breakfast, we thought was very nice with a good selection of cold stuff, cereal etc but this was included in our deal and I would not have paid €17.00 for it. We did not eat any meals but had a few drinks in the bar/restaurant area which was comfy in an IKEA type way. The furniture looks better than it is to sit on. But there is a lot to see and a wander around the hotel is a must to get the full experience.

It is well situated. We travelled by car and left our vehicle in the park and ride and it was 1 stop on the tram up the stairs and into the hotel reception could not have been more convenient. The hotel is on the docks about 30 mins easy walk from the centre of Amsterdam, but we were very lucky with the weather so might not have been so lovely in the pouring rain but the tram is a minutes walk away.

Amsterdam is undergoing major road works with a new station being built so it was difficult crossing the roads with all the - I can only say aggressive cyclists not very pleasant to walk around in most areas because of this. However we would recommend the Lovers dinner cruise, it was good food, lots of wine and friendly company worth €69 each with the 2 hour canal cruise.

The problem lies with its concept - pretending to be different and offering rooms from one to five stars. Something had to be wrong, and it is. The Lloyd Hotel might be an interesting choice when it comes to 2/3 star rooms, but malfunctions when it pretends to serve the top stars. You can't seriously state to have an offer of 5 star rooms and when one of its guests says it wants to iron a shirt, they simply put an ironing board at the room... They were supposed to know that 5 star isn't just the size of the room and the price tag, but in Lloyd Hotel it is. Bad service allround, quite vulgar restaurant, staff not helpfull - they use their reception to dry out the kitchen forks as they answer requests from the guests.
The major drawback, still, is the distance from the center. It is too far to walk and you can surely get a tram but, with temperatures around 8 below, the € 17 taxi fare to the center seems very cheap. With all the hotels lying in the city center, Lloyd doesn't make much sense.

My wife and I stayed at the Lloyd Hotel in July 2009 and I enjoyed it from the very moment we arrived. This is a very unique hotel located right on the water and close to the Tram train. Our bed was very comfortable and the service was satisfactory. We also had our own bathroom. I’m sure it is not for everyone but we would stay again.

We had a such a lovely stay. We loved our room – the staff where fantastic and food so good. It was so good to have a escape from the craziness of Amsterdam. I stay in so many big posh hotels for work and this was such a refreshing change. Its nothing like a Sofitel or Hitlon with their snooty staff and hideously bland rooms – this is so unique. More homey. Also – because there are a full range of rooms available price wise – there are a more diverse and interesting range of people staying. Not a whole load of bankers in suits that's for sure! The only thing missing that meant it was not 10/10 was big fluffy towels and robes – I think you should get that for the price. Definitely recommend it!

My husband & I stayed at the Lloyd Hotel for 2 nights in December 2008 as part of our honeymoon tour of Europe. The hotel has a strange history, as it was once a juvenile prison! (Some parts still look like a prison, especially the reception) The hotel has 5 floors: the 1st floor being 1 star, 2nd floor 2 star etc to 5th floor being 5 star. We stayed in a 3 star room, which was small but charming. I must say the linen was exceptionally comfy with feather pillows and a feather duvet. Our bath shower head had a mind of it's own, and when we asked the manger to check it out, it sprayed water all over him! Staff were a bit rude, and the breakfast was a continental spread, so unfortunately no eggs & bacon. Overall we enjoyed our stay, and it was easy to get around as the train stops across from the hotel.
