First of all, the room was horrible. The walls weren't even properly painted and outside the window was a great view of maybe 5-year-old cigarette butts. The receptionist was an uptight a-hole and had no trouble telling us that he's not supposed to respect us because we're the guests (?!?!?!) and that after calling my girlfriend stupid, because she said she didn't know it was a family hotel. FAMILY?!?!?! IT WAS FULL OF STONERS and all the time someone was smoking a joint outside...so that's a family hotel?! And you know what? To top it off, he blocked our keycards to our rooms...I guess he wanted to teach us a lesson in his pea-sized, confused and schizophrenic brain of his but as soon as I mentioned the police and stormed out of the hotel, he came back all friendly with 3 new cards. NEVER GO TO HOTEL BARBACAN!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: NEVER go to hotel barbacan!!!

Could do better if I converted my front room. This place is a death trap. None of the electrics worked, the room was damp and musty and only one window opened as the handles had been removed. The whole place smelt of the large dog which was behind the counter downstairs. If all the park benches are full and you are looking for somewhere to get your head down then consider this
Place otherwise avoid and find somewhere better to stay.

There are some really bad reviews about this place but if you want to spend as little as possible on a place to stay then this hotel is a good cheap option. we spent 4 days here but were out most of the time. The reception and the bar are very nice. The staff were very helpful with info about trams etc. The barman Michael was very nice and recommended some really good places to eat in the plantage. Just round the corner there are tram stops take the 9 or 14 into dam square etc every 7 mins ask for a 24 hour ticket only 7 euros, so a cheap and quick way to get around. The room we had in the hotel was basic but clean. There was a whiff of faulty towers now and then but you get what you pay for. Bring your own hairdryer. the steak house round the corner does the best steak ever!! and the staff are lovely!

We stayed here 18/05 - 20/05/2011. We had a double room which had 1 x double bed and 2 x single beds which were comfy. Was spacious and cleaned daily. You get a sink in the room and the shared bathroom was on our floor (the top floor, there are around 5 floors so lots of stairs to walk up if your on the top!). The bathroom had a walk in shower and was old but kept very clean. The only downside was we were smoking in our room (we know we should'nt have!) and the night receptionist took €50.00 from us because of this so if your wanting to smoke in the room I would be very careful or go elsewhere. The Lady receptionist was very nice and gives you lots of maps and info on Trams, buses, excursions etc. The city was beautiful the Hotel is about a 15 mins walk to the centre and a 5 mins walk to a really nice market. Was a nice area. Watch out for the bikes!

The only reason why we stayed here was because of the price and we quickly regretted it. Amsterdam can be a it expensive so we thought we would opt out of our 90 euro a night hotel and stay at this one for 50 euros, we thought "it's only one night...." We ended up riding our bikes most of the night so we didn't have to go back to the hotel.
The reception was really nice compared to the rooms and bathroom. Our room smelt funny and there were stains on the ceiling, sheets and towels. Not clean at all. The bathroom was tiny and not the cleanest. The reception said it opened at 6:30 and we had to catch a train in the morning. We waited to check out but no one came so we just had to slip the key under the door. The only somewhat good thing was it's location. It was close to everything via bike.
overall we would not stay here again if you were to pay us....
