After reading the reviews, we were a bit worried about staying here. I think that the way the hotel had been slagged off in previous reviews was just a lack of understanding of Dutch culture. Yes, the distance from Dam central was a 20 minute tram journey but only a 5 minute walk to the tram stop (if you know the cheeky short cut). The staff were pleasant, the rooms spotless, the breakfast (pre paid) was plentiful and the maid service was daily. The room drinks facilities were a bit hit and miss(coffee not topped up) and the drinks at the bar slightly over priced, but that's hotel bars for you. Checking in and out was fast and any questions we had were answered with a smile. We actually found the tram journey in to Amsterdam central quite pleasant during the day but don't miss your return stop at night(scary). Tram no 2 in and out of the Dam and night bus back if you miss the midnight tram back is No 358 from central station. Thankyou to all the staff at Artemis for making our stay a pleasant one.

A mate and I stayed here for the weekend when we went to the Awakenings techno festival. The hotel is minimalist in decor but very spacious, clean and refreshingly arty. In the main areas of the hotel, contemporary art and sculptures sit alongside bespoke pieces of modern furniture to give the place a unique atmosphere. The staff were all helpful and polite without being over the top.

Our room was on the small side but nicely finished. As ever with hotels, a hi-fi wouldn't have gone amiss, but all other facilities were present and correct, including (very expensive) minibar - e.g. €5 for a small Toblerone. The total absence of complimentary biscuits was a little disappointing however, especially after a night taking full advantage of some of the city's more liberal policies.

If you have some time to kill at the hotel, there's a peaceful, Ibiza-esque riverside terrace which is worth visiting if you want to chill out with a drink or two.

Getting to the hotel by public transport from the airport is a struggle - figuring out the myriad bus stops at Schiphol is a task for the brave. Best to jump in a taxi if there's more than one of you - the blue, official looking shuttle bus is €15 per person, so with two persons plus a taxi will work out cheaper.

The Artemis is good value and has bags of character. Although it's a good 4-5 miles from the centre of Amsterdam (€20-25 in a cab), you can get to the action easily by tram or bus during the day. It's in a business district so very quiet at night, but be warned - it's miles from any shops so make sure you load up on essentials at Albert Heijn on your way back from town. Recommended.

Having stayed here before in 2008 we were looking forward to going back but how things have changed. We had booked a 'queensized bed' and were given a twin bedded room (on honeymoon) which was seriously in need of a deep clean. The beds had no undersheets and the first sheet didn't even fit and on the third day new ones were put on that were simply doubles folded in two. There were no spare pillows on hand (you had to ask at reception). The room had the same dust on the table and headboard that it had had all week and the room (444) was so small that if one person was at the dressing table the other had to climb over the bed to get past.
Coming back from dinner one evening at 11.30 we went to the bar for a nightcap only to be told it was closed. Checking out was a long affair as there was one person on duty.
This hotel is now over rated as a 4 star. It is in need of a real tidy up and with more attention to customer service.

If you're looking for somewhere cheap, yet modern this is your place to stay. The rooms are ample and well designed if not becoming a bit tatty and worn around the edges. As some of the other reviews stay the staff aren't the friendliest in the world but this didn't really bother me as the deal was so cheap but if I had paid a lot of money I might have been a bit put out.
If you're flying into Schiphol my recommendation would be to head to the tourist office in the airport and buy a travel card for whatever duration you need. This cheap card (€15.50 for 72 hours) gets you unlimited use of the tram and buses etc and is a must given you're staying that little bit outside the city (10min walk to tram then around 20 mins on the tram but they are very frequent). From the airport you can get bus 195 (with the travel card) and it's only about 10 mins to the hotel - look out for the Mexx and IBM buildings and that's your stop really easy!
Breakfast is OK.
All in all a great value hotel.

The staff is very very frivolous. He did not want to serve you. When we check in, he did not tell us the facility of the hotel and not provide the map of the city spontaneously for us. From his facial expression, I feel that I was belittled. I think that is a serious discrimination. Because he treat the people who live in Europe friendly. When he faced Asian people, like us, his attitude changes to bad. I strongly recommend Asian people do not go there. The facility is okay. The hotel is far from the central station and it takes 30 mins to arrive the central station by tram.

We booked this hotel having read the reviews so were aware it wasn't near the city centre and that you would have to get a tram to get to all the attractions. Therefore, it didn't come as a surprise that a 15 min walk was required to get to the tram stop, but must admit by the end of the weekend we were getting tired of that walk, especially after a day of walking around Amsterdam. If you are prepared for that part of the trip and the 20/25 minute tram journey into town, I would recommend this hotel.

When you check in, buy your tram ticket from reception (we got a 72 hour pass for 15.50 euros) there are lots of trams and run on time and are alot cheaper than getting taxis everywhere, which are very expensive in Amsterdam.

The hotel was clean, service was fine (although there was a bit of a wait to check-in) and the area was very quiet, so all led to a very good nights sleep. My one complaint about the hotel was the standard of the bath towels, they were small, thin and rough. If the hotel management read this please think about changing them!

Otherwise, a good stay and would recommend but be ready for that walk!

Nice hotel and clean rooms, few design items, but not as much as you would expect.
Service is bad. I was left in a queue for about ten minutes to check in, only one man was behind the desk, when i finally reached the reception, no apologies, nothing, Staff did not greet me, I was just asked my last name.
As well, "please and thank you" seem to be unknown words to the staff.
Reception and restaurant staff has an attitude, no smile and don't make you feel welcome at all, when you try to get the attention of a waiter it takes ages because they are usually talking to each other instead of taking care of guests.
I had to call reception 3 times to ask an extra blanket but it was never delivered to my room, when i checked out I told reception, just sorry but no apologies. Ordered a bottle of water during dinner, which was never brought to my table.
Nice product, but again, staff needs serious guest service training.
