“Beautiful Hotel In Excellent Location”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We had such a lovely and romantic stay in this charming and historical hotel. The concierge and personal assistant made every effort to make sure we were comfortable and informed on local sites and restaurants. The building has a hisorical staircase and beautiful decor but it's really the staff who make the real difference between a good and an outstanding stay. My German partner thinks my words here are typically North American and over the top on enthusiasm but he agrees with the main points. Worth the money because of the excellent location. Enjoy your stay!

We just returned from a 2 night stay at the Waldorf Amsterdam and it was simply outstanding in every aspect. The location of the hotel is excellent in that is sits on a beautiful canal in a very peaceful part of Amsterdam.

The hotel itself is stunning, effectively linking together a string of townhouses so wonderfully. Once inside the hotel, you are greater with the kindest and most helpful staff imaginable.

The rooms were the most comfortable that we have ever stayed at. Since we were traveling with family, we reserved 3 rooms and each room was nicer than the other. So the point here is that I believe that every room in this wonderful property is outstanding.

This hotel reminded us of the rooms that we experienced at the Waldorf Chicago (the Elysian), which prior to this stay, we felt was the most impressive hotel that we ever stayed at. The Waldorf Amsterdam is now our most favorite hotel.

The The bathroom was the nicest that we have seen; with the bathtub overlooking a beautiful courtyard. If your were not looking out the window, you could simply watch TV while bathing... Very nice touch.

We are very loyal Marriott members (Platinum) and after visiting this hotel, we may very well convert to Hilton members just so we can earn points to visit this hotel again. It was that special.

We spent three nights at the new Waldorf and were very pleased. The garden behind the hotel is lovely the only drawback is that they do not have permission to serve food or drinks back there. We were especially fond of the charming bartender in the Vault. We were two couples traveling together and booked grand deluxe canal view rooms. The first rooms they gave us were on the ground floor - we were not at all happy with the room as it was directly on the sidewalk. The charming front desk person was quite pleased to tell us it had a "view of the canal" but the view was of the sidewalk with cars parked in front of the canal. The rooms are actually 2 floors down from the lobby. However, the rooms were available for us at 9am when we arrived after an overseas flight which was extremely gracious and welcoming and, when we expressed our dislike of the room, they were happy to switch us to a lovely third floor room with a beautiful view. I think the staff is very well meaning but still ironing out some of the kinks. I do not think there is a more peaceful spot in Amsterdam and am confident that it will continue to improve.

Room Tip: Avoid the street level rooms (#3 & #5) at all costs. They are "canal view" but they a...

This hotel is the essence of all that is good in Holland. The staff are unbelievably competent and friendly. The location is perfect. It is on a quiet block, but if you walk one block you are in the thick of things in Rembrandt square. Rooms are huge, modern, new and have a very Dutch modern feel. Overall, you could not ask for a better hotel experience.

As a former resident of Amsterdam, I wanted to see how the very complicated project, of turning several traditional canal houses into one hotel, had turned out. The monument & renovation laws, within in the canal area of the city, are extremely strict, in order to save this beautiful heritage for future generations. A project such as this, is almost impossible to do, since every single detail has to be approved by the city authorities and all original details need to remain in the building.

Well, The Waldorf Astoria surpassed every possible expectation! They managed to bring a new "Grand Old Lady" to the most beautiful & prestigious canal area in the city. The location is unique, since it is right in the historic city centre of Amsterdam, within walking distance of the city sights, museums, attractions & nightlife. For those who would like to relive the grandeur of Amsterdam's Golden Age, with today's modern comforts and impeccable service, this is the residence to seek.

The arrival was impressive, seeing the black & white Waldorf Astoria flag in the middle of the individual buildings, that have been converted into one elegant hotel. The entrance is a few steps up, indicating that you are entering a canal house of great prestige. In the Amsterdam Golden Age, owners had to pay taxes over the number of steps that they had at their canal house. These taxes were quite steep, so the number of steps, were an indication of the prosperity of the resident owner.

As soon as you walk into the building, you step centuries back in time and are just overwhelmed by the splendor of the premises. High ceilings with crystal chandeliers, beautiful furniture and all old details brought back to their original state. The reception area is in a canal facing room, next to the entrance. Desks with seats instead of a counter, which insure a very personal and private check-in experience.

The main hall now functions as the lobby, with Peacock Alley, an all day lounge, where they serve drinks, high-tea, and simple meals such as soups, salad & sandwiches. All served on stylish porcelain in very classic surroundings. A nice touch is the use of the original Dutch "Delfts Blue" paint in some of the areas.

One floor below is The Vault Bar, resembling a classic club, with an impressive range of rare spirits, digestifs and excellent wines by the glass. The hotel's signature restaurant "Librije's Zusje" meaning "Librije's Sister" is also located on this level.

I had dinner there with two friends and was deeply impressed by the cuisine. Our expectations where very high, since the restaurant is managed by the well known Dutch Chef Jonnie Boer and his wife Thérèse, who worked their way up to 3 Michelin Stars in their restaurant " De Librije" in the Dutch city of Zwolle. In order to guarantee a high-level culinary experience, he convinced his former assistant, Sidney Schutte, to leave 3 Michelin Star restaurant "Amber" in Hong Kong, and become The Executive Chef at The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. I live in Hong Kong and many here still mourn his departure.

We chose a five-course menu with an arrangement of pairing wines. From the amuse to the last bite of the friandises, we were in culinary heaven. One magnificent dish after another, combined with perfect wines. The service was classic & excellent, without being overly intrusive at any time. Short & very entertaining explanations of every dish and the pairing wines were given. The menu changes daily, depending on what is offered at the local markets.

They use a lot of organic produce and other ingredients, through their collaboration with farmers & other high-quality suppliers in the region. Yet the classic dishes that gave the mother restaurant it's 3 star fame, always remain on the à la carte menu. It won't be long until this new restaurant catches it's first Michelin Star, to be quickly followed by the second one. The dishes, service and decor deserve it!

The hotel offers a high-end design indoor pool with resting space, large sauna, steam room and various spa showers. A fully equipped fitness centre and a spa, managed by luxury brand Guerlin, are all located in this area, which also gives access to another unique feature of this property: the gardens.

Large gardens in the Amsterdam city centre are very rare, due to the limited space. In the renovation & construction phase, The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam decided to combine the gardens of all the buildings, into the largest privately owned garden in the city centre of Amsterdam. This including the renovation of all garden structures, such as the tea & horse carriage pavilion. The garden design was carefully reconstructed so it resembles the historic layout of traditional canal house gardens from the era. During my visit, end of May, the garden was in full bloom, with roses and tulips everywhere. Sitting in one of the many garden chairs, you find it difficult to believe that you are in the middle of a city. It's just so quiet and peaceful.

I stayed in a beautifully appointed Junior Suite on the top floor, with a window overlooking the Herengracht canal. I have stayed at other Waldorf Astoria hotels around the world, but the room design at this particular one is magnificent. Of course the original building offers a great basis, but the quality of furnishings and finishings are outstanding and very chIque. All possible details are thought of and executed to world class standards.

This includes the famous Waldorf Astoria bedding, Salvatore Ferragamo bathroom amenities, embroidered bath robes & slippers, top brand tea and coffee products and much more. All this serviced by a wonderful and meticulous housekeeping team. I only stayed one night, but had a business meeting in my suite on the day of my departure. I informed if my room could maybe be tidied up a little, prior to my meeting. Within 10 minutes two ladies from housekeeping turned up and completely brought my room back to check-in state, also arranging replenishment of water, and the tea and coffee amenities. This is just one case of the staggering pro-active service I encountered during my stay.

Of course there are other stylish hotels around the world that could match this new hotel in The Netherlands, but one factor is difficult to surpass: the team members of The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. From the concierge, porters, security, reception, housekeeping, the restaurants, bar and the spa, you just felt so appreciated for being their guest. Their personal greetings, enquiries about the quality of your stay and the question if they could do anything to make you even more comfortable, made you feel very welcome. All of them anticipating to needs of which you didn't even realize you had them.

I stay an average of 90 nights a year in hotels within the Hilton portfolio, ranging from Hilton, Conrad to Waldorf Astoria. This gives me a very good reference in service standards within the group's portfolio. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is there at the very top. Not surprisingly, the owners of the hotel chose long time hospitality veteran Mr Roberto Payer as the General Manager. A true gentleman with hospitality & service embedded in his DNA, who climbed the ranks within the Hilton group step by step. Developing his incredible eye for detail along the way.

Having stayed several times at his former and also excellent hotel, The Hilton Amsterdam, I noticed, that so many of his staff already worked there for many years. Yet the Amsterdam hotel industry is known for it's high employee turnover rate. Mentioning this In a conversation with one of the concierges there, he labelled it the " Mr Roberto" factor, saying that they very much liked working with him, because he makes his team members feel appreciated and gives them opportunities to develop.

It seems clear that he brought exactly this, to The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. Initiating the most daring and beautiful hotel project in Amsterdam is quite something, but bringing together a wonderful team that offers their guests such warmth, care and unprecedented service levels, is a fantastic achievement.

There used to be another "Grand Old Lady" among the hotels in Amsterdam, right on the Amstel River. I'm afraid that Mr Payer and his team have forced her into final retirement. Thank you all at The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, for an unforgettable stay. Looking very much forward to returning late September!

Room Tip: Book a room or Junior Suite overlooking the canal.

A new hotel and only 5 month young. A must stay. Spacious rooms, great restaurant, spa and in the midst of a stunning city. We loved the three nights here. Mostly on the hotel's complimentary bicycles.
