“Home away from home”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights in March and it was a great experience.

Paul and Karen went out of their way to make us welcome and to make the stay as pleasant as possible. There were lots of nice touches like cakes left out in the afternoon to have with tea or coffee. At the same time, they were in no way intrusive.

A listing of handy hints for day trips using public transport were provided and we tried the trips to Volendam and to Delft. We also went to the windmill in the outskirts of Amsterdam (Nieuw Sloten). We thoroughly enjoyed each of the trips and had no major issues following the instructions.

The house is located near tram lines and a canal and was well suited to exploring the city.

The room was great and very clean.

Great experience and would recommend it to anyone (that I like).

Stayed in October 2013 for 5 days. Paul knows his stuff and guides you to his place perfectly. The place is beautiful red and white decor, with tastefully done furnishings, simple yet comfortable.
We choose the room right on top, as we wanted a private bathroom. (you have to request for it, as quite a few rooms have shared bathroom only). The stairs are narrow and steep, really have to go slow on them, but the staff helps with the luggage, not very easy to negotiate of you had a long party going at Dam square. Chocolate and the fruit Jenever was the delight factor.

Location is in a quite neighborhood, but near restaurants, and grocery stores. The walk through Vondelpark is an experience not to be missed, unless you are there in Amsterdam for the red light area only. To live close to locals and not near touristy packed places has its merits, as you experience the place in a deeper manner.
If you are coming back after Cindrella's midnight ball (after the trams have stopped,) you are better off taking a taxi as the bus service is not so frequent. Or you can take the walk back through the charming Vondelpark, its perfectly safe at any hour.

The garden in the picture is part of a room, you can't walk into it, but not private either as the kitchen door on the ground floor opens into it.

Breakfast is not sufficient as it is only, milk and cereals.
Buy the iamsterdam card if you are in the city for more than 3 days and want to explore more than 3 museums.

Room Tip: If you want a private bathroom, specify it to Paul at the time of booking. The room on the top floor...

After a steaming concert of the Desert Touareg Band Tinariwen in Paradiso, I had the pleasure of staying the night over in "Bed and Breakfast Paul&Karen.
What a beautiful location near the Vondelpark in Amsterdam.
Comfortable room and very friendly owners, who took care off me like I was home, NO even better than that!
In the morning they surprised me with a Breakfast Treat that was really superb.
Thanks for taking care of me, till next time,

Stefan

My mom and I came off season and were pleasantly surprised to receive the Canal House, more of a flat than a room. It was clean and had everything we needed. Perfect for someone with allergies: no pets, no smoke, no carpet, no stairs. Paul allowed us to check in early as we had 9 hour jetlag, and he gave us plenty of information on the location. If you have special needs or questions, I would suggest emailing them before making your reservation. They can be very helpful. True the breakfast is not sufficient for some, but the market a few doors down has everything you could want. We even made dinner one night. Word of advice: if you are travelling from the U.S.A. and have a car to park, make sure you have a bank card WITH A CHIP! You may not pay cash or credit card or bank card with no chip. Other than that problem, the Park + Ride was a great deal, even if it was a bit of a hike. Yet, the tram stop was close by. The review is missing one star mostly for the breakfast, but also the linens were not fresh, in fact they actually smelled bad (perhaps because we were off-season?). However, still a good value, a good place, with good people.

Room Tip: Contact Paul ahead of time and ask what room is available. They responded to my email immediately an...

Dear guest,
thank you for your wonderful feedback about our Bed and Breakfast. We took your comment about the sheets very much to heart as we have an extensive laundry preparation which includes eco-friendly detergent and great care to iron each individual sheet on-site. If you had mentioned your displeasure with the sheets they would have been changed immediately.
We are also pleased to now feature a breakfast treat specially prepared by Paul Michael which is brought to your room every morning.
Best regards
Paul and Karen

This was a nice clean and reasonably priced B&B. Friendly and comfortable. Also spacious - unusual for Amsterdam. You have to leave your shoes at the door. Not sure why as the carpets are not that nice or new. We stayed in the Garden Room which was very nice and airy a plus was sitting outside in a courtyard. Good bed but the furniture and fittings are just a little tired. The bathroom was shared (teeny weeny) in a former cupboard, without a wash hand basin so after using the toilet you have to go in the kitchen or your room to wash hands. A longish walk through the vogel park to the city centre so worth hiring bikes. (about 1mile)

We visit Amsterdam often as my husband's family is there and found this b and b online. The location is very good for a neighborhood ambiance and the owners couldn't be nicer or more helpful. The grocery store down the street and the many restaurants nearby make it a very good area for visitors. . The bar/restaurant next door was handy for a beer and some "bitter ballen" and was ideal for sitting out on the terrace overlooking the canal. We stayed 6 nights and enjoyed the canal facing room however we do wish they had a small table/night stand on each side of the bed for glasses, books, water glass, etc. These items had to be placed on the floor at night as there was no where else to put them on one side while the other person had a table to use. I did mention this to the owner and he said they are looking into adding another small table or night stand. The entry into the room is very private and we were never bothered by street noise. There are two trams within a 7 minute walk and all connections within the city are available there. The shared kitchen is great as we like to have a ham/cheese typical Dutch breakfast rather than the cereal that is offered. We bought items in the local super market and were happy having our morning meal when we chose instead of a set time as we have encountered at other b and b's. Another plus for us seniors were the lack of steep stairs as we were on the lower level of the house. The room we had was immaculate and the house keepers were very friendly and efficient. We liked the chocolates left on the pillows and the Dutch fruit genever. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return to this excellent b and b!

Room Tip: Canal room is nice however curtains must be kept closed due to street traffic. The garden room in ba...

We stayed at this B&B for 4 nights this September. We arrived in cold drizzling rain in the late afternoon. We found the B&B with no problem following the directions Paul had provided. He showed us our room and turned on the heat as soon as he saw how cold we were and poured us an apirtif glass of red current gin. A decanter of this gin was in the room for us to enjoy. He left no stone unturned when explaining the smart TV, where breakfast items were and which shelf in the small refrigerator was ours. He also provided a sheet/map of grocery, laundry and local area restaurants he would recommend. The housekeeping staff was like no other we have encountered! They were pleasant and happy every day. We stayed in the garden room which was charming and comfortable. The experience staying here was a respite from the hectic busy city. Thank You Paul!
