“disappointed”
Reviewed 7 June 2011

Stayed here for business. Bid on a website for 5 star in the city center, got a 4 (?) star in the middle of nowhere. Nice and friendly front desk, very poor housekeeping, no customer service, terrible location, decent coffee. Will never stay here again.

On Tuesday, June 8th there was a one day Tram Strike. Seems to me this was a prefect opportunity to create good will amongst the guests by adding an extra shuttle to avoid guest's inconvenience but no, no extra shuttle service to or from the hotel.

I asked to board the 11AM shuttle, was told there were no more seats by a manager (?) with a real bad attitude and then watched as the bus pulled away with 2 empty seats. Maybe the manager (?) should have a) gone out to look, b) offered to put on an extra bus, c) made an attempt to provide customer service, or d) at least been apologetic about it. But his response was that the tram strike "was not their problem". Granted, it wasn't their problem but it was an opportunity to go the extra mile for their guests.

Housekeeping is very poor. Returned to the room to find a piece of paper on the floor, the towel still hanging on the door and old newspaper still sitting on the bathroom sink.

All in all, very disappointed. This is my 4th or 5th trip to Amsterdam. I always had a great time, never had a problem with any hotel here but this place is a real dud. It is truly in the middle of nowhere, completely dead at night, no restaurants nearby, no facilities of any kind nearby and no attempt by the staff to make up for the poor location with a little good service.

Don't fall for their upgrade offer like I did. Not worth it. Also forgot to mention, the internet was terribly slow too.

Room Tip: First: Stay somewhere else

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your comment. We would like to apologize for the lack of service you experienced with our concierge and the poor quality experienced from our housekeeping department. Needless to say both comments have been forwarded to the appropriate departments. Through our online questionnaires or an email to Hotel.Amsterdam@moevenpick.com, we invite you to communicate to us your name or which room you stayed and the date so we can trace what went wrong with the cleaning of your room.

We can assure you that our free shuttle service is our number one positive comment and we will do the utmost to consider your suggestions should a strike occur again or perhaps better handle no-shows. It is exceptionnal that guests do not show up for their reservations however we also need to keep a timely service for the other guest who booked the service, therefore cannot look for additional guests while the ‘no-shows’ can still claim their seats at the last minute.

Our hotel offers free wireless internet that has enough broadband for exchanging emails, visit websites for making bookings, etc however heavier applications require more bandwith which can indeed be purchased and are included in our Executive Package, among other services.

On a last note, we would like to know on which website you booked your stay with us, it is not the objective to be selected on ‘opaque’ hotel booking channels by guests looking for strictly 5-star hotels so we would like to rectify this with the third-party website involved.

We would appreciate the opportunity to make up for a bad experience on your next stay in Amsterdam and thank you for the nice comment on our front desk personnel.

With warm regards,
Albert Rouwendal

Was not sure what to expect as we flew into Schiphol and we took the train in to Centraal Station and we were aware that the hotel was not to far from the station.
But not sure how far as maps can be deceiving. Anyway it took about 15 mins to walk to the hotel and that is with our suitcase. To be fair i dont walk particularly fast either. have to watch the Cyclists!!!
On entering the reception it was spacious very modern looking, clean, greeted as we entered . We approached the desk and we got checked in quickly and head straight to our room.
The room itself was quite big in comparison to some of the hotels we have stayed at. there was a big window which was lovely as it looked on to the harbour where you could sit and watch the boats etc coming and going. The hotel is beside the dock where cruise liners come in so handy if you are going a cruise.
Only down side to the room was that we were on floor 6 on the side that looked on to the office block. You were not high enough that you couldn't see the office workers. but ti was the weekend so it was fine.
There was plenty of hanging space, there was a safe, full length mirror, tea and coffee facilities although we never had a kettle but we didn't bother asking for one, hair drier, TV desk .
Unfortunately we never got the chance to go to the bar/restaurant as we were out and about most of the day/evening.
Overall a very pleasant stay if you dont mind a little walk to get to main things well worth stay here.

A "Wow!" view in Amsterdam of the harbour, evenings are superb. Rooms are generous - true 4* hotel size and decor. There is (limited but sufficient) free wifi in the rooms.

The only downside is that it is a bit of a walk to Central Station. If the weather is nice it is a fine walk of 10-15minutes. There is a tram that stops across the street and is one stop from Central Station, it runs quite regularly but not all night.

Be aware that on days when a ship is arriving/leaving you might get an earth shaking blast at 6:00am - not often, not the hotel's fault.

Room Tip: Away from elevators. (Not loud, but some guests..)

We booked through a bidding website, and got a great price (70USD per night). It is a 10 minute walk straight from Central Station. The hotel itself towers over the surrounding area and we had great views looking back over the city area on about the 16th floor.
We hired bikes for the time we were there so just chained them up on the fence outside the complex, and had easy access to the town using them. Amsterdam is built for bikes so it felt un-natural not to be on one of them. There is also a shuttle that runs to and from the station every 30 mins, and a tram stop directly out the front of the hotel which takes you directly in through the main part of town (Dam Square etc).
The rooms were very modern, very clean and the beds were fantastic.
We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to anyone wanted to be out of the hustle and bustle, but still close enough to it that you dont spend half a day getting back and forth.

Regards,
Aussie Assault

We stayed three nights in mid May at the Moevenpick. I had purchased two rooms for my family. The rooms were large nice and very clean. Although off the beaten path it was no problem. We just purchased a GVD pass and hopped on tram 25 which takes you to the city center. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were going on a cruise and the ship docked right beside the hotel. This made boarding a snap. Here are the negatives. Be careful in the bath tub . It is slick, and is very tall with about a 20" to 24" height to the floor. The bathroom floors are also slick tile. There is no exit handle from the tub other than a towel rack. We do not have mobility issues, but I can see where this could be a real problem for the elderly or those with mobility issues. So be careful here. I had heard complainants about the cleanliness of the toilets. Our toilets were slightly stained, but I believe this may have been caused by chemicals in the water. It was not bad at all and Ive seen much worse. Other than that the room was spotless. I would highly recommend this hotel especially for those going on a cruise from Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Use tram 25 right beside the hotel .

It's about 10 to 15 minutes walk from the Central Train Station in Amsterdam, right next to the Cruise Terminal and it was delightful. The staff was very friendly and helpful and there are free shuttle bus into the centre every 30 minutes. Nothing was too much trouble! The buffett was lovely, lots of choices with healthy ones too.

Room Tip: It has to be facing the river and the city!

The hotel is in a very good condition, the room was great -> almost 5 stars hotel. however. there are no balconies in this hotels, and the window only opens into a small crack. all the deisgn is shouting buisness hotel
the hotel is situtated 10 minutes of walk from the center -> not that far if you consider the amount of walking we did - but nothing much to see around beside ships and cannals - which is a nice view out of the window but not as friendlly when you walk by.
The hotel has a complete no smoking policy which some people (like me) will find problematic when you spend a vacation in Amsterdam.
the policy is very strict and includes a fine of 150 euro and kicking you out of the hotel.
smoking outside is also not an enjoyable thing - the hotel is quite far and there is nothing next to it. which means very cold winds (in the end of may) and it is not a great joy. it could have been nice if they had a protected place next to the hotel.
the food in the morning was nice/
my rank to the hotel would be 3.5 and not 3.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in our hotel. I am sorry to hear that you were not informed about the fact that we have a dedicated smoking area in the hotel on the ground floor. This is a covered spot and even has heating lamps.
I hope I have informed you sufficiently and we look forward to welcoming you back soon to test the area.
