“Brilliant - Great value for Money”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

GREAT BUDGET HOTEL!! Old Nickel is very well situated, right on the edge of the Red Light and a Stones throw away from Dam Square (5mins walk). Quaility of hotel is good (I've stayed in worse) and breakfast which was included was good for the overall price.

Staff was extremely friendly. Old Nickel itself was full so we stayed in another hotel called Hotel Cafe Schagen, which is not even 20metres from the Old Nickel and opposite a very cozy coffee shop – The Lady who checked us in also walked us to the door of this hotel. Shared Toilet and shower room was very clean - no complaints. Key entry system is great, feels safe and secure to stay in. This place is perfect for short stays and I will defiantly be staying here again - also referring to all friends and family!

Overall – Great, friendly welcoming staff, Great location, extremely great value for money!!

Upon arriving at the establishment we were greeted by a stoned cat (with fleas) and a friendly greeting from the lady behind the bar.

Unfortunately everything went downhill from there, we were informed we would be staying in another building about 20 metres down the road.

After a long day of travelling we were disappointed to have to climb 5 flights of stairs to get to our room, the room, described as a double / twin, had 2 very worn, bowed, single beds in either corner, both complete with fag burns all over the blankets. With the layout of this building we find it hard to believe you could fit a double bed in any of the rooms, so don't expect one.

Shortly after getting to the room, the bite marks from the fleas on the cat were evident over our hands, feet, knees and bum. (Could have been combined with Mosquitos?)

Only one point of exit was down the stairs we came up, being a smoking hotel, the one narrow wooden staircase didn't seem like a suitable fire escape, if a fire broke out below us we would have been goners.

Shared bathroom was just outside the door and was ok.

Breakfast was disastrous, cat hair all over the bar in which it was served, the coffee was awful and the "Omlette" was 2 fried eggs held together with a rasher of bacon which had more fat than meat. We can't comment on the taste, there was none, it was less breakfast, more of a bush ticker trial.

To go with the Omlette we had some jam and a half loaf of cheap bread, no toaster in sight, the gentleman serving us seemed to be very flustered, whilst eating we witnessed an argument over a cup of orange juice with a customer and the Scottish owner.

We didn't return the second day for breakfast, we didn't want to tempt fate, turning down a free meal says a lot.

Rooms need a complete renovation, if not for the location they would have no customers, but this is probably the reason they can also get away with charging so much!

How people have rated this 5* is beyond me, clearly been smoking too much Mary Jane, probably the same reason that the cat hasn't upped sticks and left.

On our 5 week tour of Europe we've stayed in places half the price but twice the quality, this is by a long way the worst - AVOID!

If you don't mind living out of your travel bag in small and basic rooms then this is a good place to stay.its clean and serves a purpose of sleeping, storing your bag,and freshening up.ideal if visiting for the night life and other attractions that Amsterdam has to offer.
