“a good hotel, but I did not like the design”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2011

Amrath is a good hotel, maybe not a 5 stars hotel.
the building is an ancient one so, I would say it is a little bit spectral with its hall and architecture.
rooms are a little bit spectral as well, a very dark design, not my style I have to say.

Services are very good. the bed with lot of pillows is wonderful, as well as the free use of coffee machine, tea maker and the room bar free of charges.
I appreciated Wifi free everywhere and the little business center with Pc and printer always available.

Location is very good, close by the central station in Amsterdam and also to Dam square.

The holiday unfortunately got off to a bad start when my partner's passport + some money were stolen from a bag right outside Amsterdam's Centraal station just as soon as we arrived. However, after reporting this to the local police we went to the hotel. It is in a stunning building and is in a perfect location, just round the corner from all the shops cafes attractions and transport links to other parts of Amsterdam. However, we had an upsetting experience there on check in as they could not find our booking. I showed them the confirmation from Lastminute.com of booking and full payment in advance, 4+ half months previously. They admitted that but asked us to wait in the bar while they sorted it out and told us we would be given a free drink to make up for the inconvenience. We were waiting 25 minutes and nobody from the bar came to us or knew about the free drink. My partner asked them again and they said that they had "found us a room" but did not appear to have found our original booking. I made sure this "replacement" room was the same grade as what we had already paid for. That was confirmed. However what we found most upsetting was the fact that they asked us for credit card details in order to pay for any extras we may spend at hotel as we were there on a room only basis. However we only have debit cards and they then said that they would not just take a "print" of the card + bill us at the end of our stay but would take out immediately EU400 ( about £350 ) and refund any unspent money at check out. We thought that was very cheeky and unfair as if we were being penalised for "only" having debit cards. None of this was mentioned in any of the booking information or on the hotel's own website. Especially after the theft of the money that afternoon this was a "double whammy" and upset us both. However, the rest of the stay there was lovely. The staff were polite and helpful. The room was in a nice quiet area and had a free mini bar. They even provided a beautiful cake and bottel of champagne for my partner's 50th Birthday in the middle of our 1 week stay.

Room Tip: If booking through a "third party" website, make sure you visit the hotel's own websit...

The hotel was a fabulous old merchant shipping/banking building with lots of history and a good location. Despite being in the middle of the city it was quiet and the views of the canals are fabulous.
The only slight complaint was that my room didn't have a bath only a shower and I like to sit and soak after all the travel.

There is no way this is a 5* hotel by UK standards. There is no nice, comfy lounge to relax and enjoy a coffee and the wi-fi is temperamental and throws you out on a regular basis. One day we got back to our hotel room past four pm and the room still hadn’t been serviced. My partner complained and asked for an explanation but there was no apology.
The Grand Amrath likes to bill itself as a brand new hotel, actually it is a refurbished old shipping building and many details betray this, not least lavatorial, cracked wall tiles lining some of the corridors and stairwells. The overall effect is quite gothic and a bit eerie!
Food and drink prices are extortionate and the rooms are incredibly dark on an evening, even with all the lights on. We found ourselves frequenting the excellent, modern Mint Hotel across the road for food, drinks and to relax in their comfy, bright wi-fi lounge at the end of a busy day in Amsterdam.
We were on the first floor and the cleaners seemed to congregate outside our room from early in the morning, banging about and leaving heaps of dirty towels and laundry near the door. The bed was very comfortable but because the building wasn't built as a hotel with concrete floors, we could hear the guests above us walking around in the early hours so sleep was broken.
One tip – make sure you get the train from Schipol airport – it’s only 4 euro each person and the station is literally next to the Mint Hotel and across the road from the Grand Amrath. We went back to the airport this way and it was so easy with the train being prompt and comfortable. The taxi ride coming in cost us 60 euros, so be warned! Another tip – don’t buy any pastries from the first small corner shop you come to after turning left out of the Grand Amrath entrance…rip-off expensive (12 euro for two v. small croissants and two Danish pastries) and all tasted stale and were powder-dry.
We hired bikes one day, which was brilliant and can thoroughly recommend MAC Bike Hire next to the station (17 Euro pp inc insurance for one day’s hire).

The Grand Hotel Amrath is a stunning art deco building with gorgeous rooms and some brilliant additional perks like a free minibar, Nespresso machine and free wifi.

Unfortunately, we were left hanging around in reception for 25 minutes while waiting to check in. During this period I counted that no fewer than six uniformed members of staff utterly ignored us, without even a "sorry to keep you waiting, we'll be with you shortly". The staff seemed lacking in warmth and this made an expensive experience seem less than luxurious.

Stayed there for four nights in October. The hotel has three advantages. First, the location is great: across from Centraal Station, within ten minutes from the Dam, and a few minutes from the Nieuwmarkt area. Second, the rooms are great, bed and beddings are very comfy. Third, the staff was very accommodating. When we checked in, we realized that they had given us a room with one king-size bed, instead of two twin beds. In addition, the room was on the first floor with "city view," i.e., facing the road. As such, it was very loud. We requested a change, and were accommodated immediately, this time in a room facing the canal. The new room still had a king-size bed, but the staff brought in an additional single bed. The room was very large by European standards. Would stay there again, except for the noisy, "city view" rooms.

First time visitors to Amsterdam. The Amrath is located well, has an impressive lobby and accomodating staff. Willem the concierge was particularly helpful in arranging tours and transportation. Central Station and Dam Square are close by, about three blocks. Good central location. Most comfortable hotel bed we've ever slept in with incredible linens. The mini-bar is a fantastic touch. It was refilled daily and the selection of beverages is extensive. The food in the restaurant and lounge is tasty. The staff are very helpful and pleasant also.
In particular, the breakfast buffet is wonderful with lots of options.

Room Tip: We paid an extra 20 euro a night for a city-view room and it was so worth it. We could watch the ci...
