“Very good but not quite 5-star”
Reviewed 12 June 2013

Location is perfect, a very short walk from the central station made it easy - even with luggage - to get to.

Service at reception was a little slow - we had to wait to check-in and also wait to check-out at least 5-10 minutes each time.

Similarly the service in the bar area was "relaxed" - difficult to know if they're just giving you plenty of time or if they're not really paying attention but we sat with empty plates for quite a while on a couple of occasions.

The quality of the food was very good though. We had the "Lazy Sunday" afternoon tea (with late checkout) and it was fabulous, really tasty sandwiches, scones and a big selection of cakes, biscuits and sweets complemented by a selection of different teas.

We had a "deluxe double" room which was immaculately clean and the bathroom was beautiful with a very large bathtub. The room was a little smaller than we'd expected - although unsuprising in hindsight given the location. It was incredibly quiet for a city-centre hotel - couldn't hear a sound when we were in our room.

The building itself is fascinating - a real maze of old corridors, tall ceilings and massive wooden doors. Very impressive, beautiful and quirky building.

Having never stayed anywhere else in Amsterdam I can't make any comparisions locally, but compared to other 5-star hotels we've visited, this one didn't quite make the mark when it came to service and value for money.

We rolled our bags directly here from the train station (~0.2 miles). The location is pretty central to everything - less than a half mile walk away... The building is a stunner. Many architectural details that should not be missed (check the stairwells!). We were in room 117. The bed was a KING that screamed comfort. The view out our ridiculously huge window was gorgeous. We had an instant coffee/espresso machine in our room and all supplies for it AND the mini-bar were refilled daily without cost. Having packed one incorrect adapter for our Apple products, I went to reception and asked where I could find a shop to pick one up. She reached into a drawer and handed me a universal adapter and said, "just return it upon check-out". Lovely! My husband and I enjoyed a nutritious and delicious breakfast every morning in the hotel restaurant, Seven Seas for a cost of €50. We had sandwiches in the bar/lounge for dinner our last evening and wished we'd done that earlier in our visit. Yum! Top of the line accommodations, food, beverage, service and attention. An absolute 5+ star rating from me!

This hotel is a good example of how the star rating is very misleading. This hotel proudly displays its five stars and the building and reception area is imposing. There are lots of 5 star features (spa, pool, extras in the rooms) that seem to raise the star rating. But walk along the maze of corridors (think The Shining) where some idiotic designer saw fit to do the walls and carpets in dark red with no natural light and you get an idea of how dark and dreary it is.One small lift meant long waits to go up and down. The bedroom corridors have carpets badly frayed with gaps between the pieces ready to trip you up. It looks badly neglected, dark and depressing.
The dining room was beautifully set up for dinner but was deserted every night.
But much worse are the rooms. Ours (218) was L shaped with half the L being the corridor and all the furniture sqeezed into the other narrow half. Imagine red and black carpet, dark terracotta walls, miles of dark wood furniture, dark grey curtains and then same idiotic designer added a black, red and purple painting on the wall. Even the windowsills and skirting boards were black and brown. It was so miserable and clautrophobic we hated every minute spent in our room and as we were staying for five days this was miserable.
I never make complaints in hotels. I very politely pointed out that for two women staying five days in a room with a tiny clothes hanging area and just one small shallow drawer we would be very grateful if we could be moved to a room with a little more storage space. We didn't need the desk that was almost as big as a bed but places to put our clothes would be very helpful. I was told all rooms had wardrobes the same size which I discovered for myself was a blatant lie. I was told as I'd booked a 'deluxe' room that I couldn't expect anything more.
We had to keep most of our clothes in our suitcases on the floor.
No security peepholes in the doors. Robes in the room were old and coarse and useless.
Certainly not 5 star comfort and luxury. Not even close.
On the plus side the beds were very comfy.
If you read the other reviews where people are raving keep mine in mind and consider this hotel carefully.

Nice old looking hotel but very well maintained. We stayed for 3 nights in amsterdam. Rooms looks a bit dark and old but its clean and high ceiling. The mini bar is complimentary. We were in time for the Queens day so we had a problem hiring airport transfers on the day that we were about to leave to we brought our luggages a day before and store them in the airport lockers. The concierge helped us in doing this. Very friendly and accommodating staffs.

The hotel looks like a castle. It's 400 m from Amsterdam Central. We loved it right away.
The people who worked there were were both great and neutral. Everyone was service minded and took good care of us. But the guys that worked the evening shift were adorable. They were funny and smiling. They made us laugh and that's what made the hotel experience even better.
The room was cleaned and the bathroom was great.
The bed was the best bed that I've ever slept in at a hotel before. The room keeper that we got the pleasure to meet was cute and polite. Even though we said that she didn't have to clean our room, she clean it when we were out. She even gave us more coffee for the coffee machine (it was only room for 5, but she gave us more than that), because she noticed that we liked it. All the drinks and snacks in the room and minibar were free.
We never had the opportunity to visit the fifth floor (the top), but I keep that in mind that I can visit it the next time I stay here.

We did not visit the spa or it at the hotel, so I can't say anything about it. But I would guess, as the rest of the hotel, that it would be great.

Room Tip: We had rooms in the basement, and it was quit a labyrinth, but that made the hotel more exiting.

Just back from a short break to Amsterdam and we felt compelled to write about our hotel.

Housed in the former offices of a Shipping Company, this hotel is within easy (if you can avoid the myriad of bicycles) walking distance of Centraal station, even with luggage.

The hotel is on a busy thoroughfare but we were not disturbed at all, even with the window open the traffic noise was tolerable.

As it was my partner's birthday the hotel very kindly sent cake to our room, it's the smallest of gestures but it adds so much to the trip.

We had a complimentary mini bar which was replenished daily and the Wi-Fi (included in our rate) was fast and reliable!

The staff were all well dressed, spoke very good English and were helpful yet professional.

This is by no means a budget option but, for a special occassion, this is THE place to stay in Amsterdam.

We would definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 100 which was once a director's office - the bathroom is stunning!

Have just returned from a great first time visit to Amsterdam, which we thoroughly enjoyed, however I was expecting a little more from this hotel.

IMHO this is not a 5*, carpets were worn and service was not attentive enough for 5*, there seemed to be new staff who maybe needed some more training?

Room was ok, however nothing more than a standard hotel room, yes bed was comfortable, nespresso coffee machine good, yes came in early evening and replaced used cups and replenished tea/coffee, tidied bathroom but no turn down, free minibar good but this is paid for in rate

breakfast ok, hot items left under a heat lamp not my favourite, ordered French toast one morning, don't order if in a rush....., didn't use restaurant or bar so can't comment.

Pool area, small but enjoyed after walking around the city

Checkin made an error on our card and charged 3x to our bank.....not good and this was merely laughed off as the employee was a new starter and not made aware until check out - not happy!

Loved Amsterdam however if/when we go back I would choose more central although this hotel was handy for the central station
