“Convenient location, good value for money, free mini bar!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

No negative surprises - the room and the facilities (pool & spa) are exactly the way they look in the pictures on the hotel website. Very pleasant 2-night stay.

LOCATION:
My husband and I walked there from the Amsterdam Central Station. Even though we had two large suitcases, the trip was very manageable. If you, like us, don't mind walking, the canal area is very much within walking distance. We even walked to the Anne Frank House and the 9 Streets shopping district - very pleasant stroll. Chinatown and the Red Light District are just nearby.

ROOM:
High ceiling, spacious, tastefully decorated, modern bathroom, and FREE mini-bar. We got a room facing the canal, which is delightful. FREE WiFi. English language channels.

SPA/POOL:
In the basement, but nice. I used the facilities in the morning; I got the whole place to myself as I was the only one there!

SERVICE:
The young concierge we dealt with was very helpful and no-nonsense. However, there was a little hiccup with our check-in process - we arrived at 8am after our long haul flight landed at 6am. We were promised by the manager a room with canal view on the fourth floor by 2pm, the usual check-in time. When we returned to the hotel at 3pm, the gentleman on duty said that our room was not ready, but there would be another without canal view available. He tried to stick to his spiel, but after much back and forth and my insistence, he admitted to their mistake and gave us an upgrade. I appreciated his gesture; he was polite all along. Interestingly, another gentleman who checked in before us returned to the front desk a minute later to say that there were still "other" guests in the room he was given! I suppose the hotel might have some issues with managing the check-in process...

Nonetheless, we enjoyed our stay. The staff were helpful and problems were promptly resolved. We are very glad to have chosen the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam.

Great location and very interesting building. The head quarters of a major shipping company had been converted to a hotel. The rooms are the original offices of the company so are very big with equally large bathrooms. You can even see the original travelator and safes and counters on some room levels.

Room itself was well appointed and unusually had a free minibar! Also had a nespresso coffee machine and a kettle and if you forget your travel adapters an English plug as well as continental ones. The room was very quiet despite being on the ground floor as we were on the back of the hotel overlooking a canal. The only slight disappointment was the hair dryer that didn't work and it took 2 calls and over 20 minutes to get a new one. While not usually a problem we were going to a wedding so speed was important.

We didn't eat in he hotel but I did use the pool - nice and even had a water jet so you could swim against it rather than doing hundreds of lengths, steam and 2 saunas at different temperatures. It is worth a walk around the corridors to see the original shipping company features.

The hotel is very convenient. About a 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Central train station so don't bother with a cab it would take you longer in e one way system and the traffic

Ps we bought our Stroopwafels in Hema a slightly odd department store but only €1.50 vs mini markets wanting twice the price. Do also go into the many cheese shops for free tastings of the local Dutch cheese it kept us refuelled while walking around.

Would stay here again.

Spent 4 nights here in April of this year (2014). The entire building is a work of art. Our room was beautiful, clean, and full of amenities. The staff were helpful and attentive. Perfect location, just steps from Dam Square.

Just spent 3 nights at this hotel. I had e- mailed to ask for kingsize bed and had also mentioned my husbands birthday. The hotel left a card and a lovely cake in our room. Lovely size room. Pillows felt like sleeping on a cloud. So very comfortable.

Bathroom had a lovely big bath and a separate shower with a fab shower head. Nice touches, coffee machine and complementary bar.

We would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Mark sure you look at the main stair case so lovely.

Just back from 2 nights, 3 days in Amsterdam to celebrate our wedding anniversary & had a fantastic time at this hotel. As previous reviews have put, rooms were of a good standard with plenty of space & amenities, bathroom was large with a powerful shower & huge, seperate bath tub. The free mini bar was the icing on the cake- with Amsterdam prices for drinks, we always enjoyed a glass of wine or beer before we headed out for the night. A knock on the door after we first checked in revealed sparkling rose wine/champagne as a treat for our anniversary & a lovely hand written card from the hotel- highly, highly recommended- should we head back to Amsterdam in the future, I will be sure to book here again.

Directions from central station:

Come out of centrum exit, in the skyline you will see nh brabazon hotel, head for this sign & walk past the hotel, past the church & round the corner, keep heading straight past the next corner & hotel should be in front of you (opposite side of the road is doubletree Hilton)

Room Tip: We stayed in 317 which was very good, although no canal view
