“afternoon tea”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

I didn't get to stay in the hotel but a friend booked afternoon tea for our party - well what can I say ?? the service and staff were very slow - we were served with sandwiches and cakes and I really cant explain how awful they were - we had 3 types of tea and they all tasted like dishwasher !!! so when is asked the staff for a coffee - 30 mins later - the coffee was not much better - at a price of 40 euros per person I will not be coming back - what a waste of money !!!

We were arrived well in advance of the 2pm check in time, reception were very welcoming and took care of our bags, provided us with a city map and assured us that our room would be ready soon.

The room its self was well appointed, of a good size with a fantastic bathroom with huge bath and separate shower cubical. We were fortunate enough to stay on the 4th floor with a good view of the city skyline and an adjacent canal. The complimentary mini bar was well stocked, including alcohol miniatures, and refilled daily.

I can honestly say the bed was probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, my fiancé would agree.

The spa services on site were of a high standard and never too busy to enjoy.

We chose to have breakfast on one day our stay, it was a good breakfast, typical of such a hotel.

The hotel its self is perfectly located to enable you to enjoy all that Amsterdam has to offer and the staff are very attentive, if you're thinking of staying here I suggest you do!

Update: A day after writing my favorable review (below) of the Grand Amrath Hotel in Amsterdam, I checked my credit card statement. There was an unapproved charge of $168 made to my credit card by this hotel. My room was prepaid on Orbitz. We paid the municipality tax upon checkout and were told we had a ZERO balance. We never used room service or the hotel's bar or restaurant. So this charge was definitely BOGUS! We emailed the hotel 2 days ago, but never got a reply. I had no choice but to call my credit card to dispute the charge. My advice...Check your credit card statement carefully upon returning from your trip!

We picked the Grand Amrath in Amsterdam mostly because of the good reviews here and its proximity to Central Station. I like to be able to get from the airport to my hotel easily with luggage and without needing a taxi. The Amrath fit the bill. A train leaves right from the Schipol and the hotel is only a 3 minute walk from the station, easy peasy! If you do choose another hotel, nearly every corner of the city is accessible via Tram, bus or metro, all doable with luggage. And actually other areas of the city can be far more charming and less crowded. That said, this location worked for us.

The building is quite interesting, inside and out, but it does have some quirks. There is no real lobby, only a small room to one side, more like an office where check in occurs. The hallways take a bit to get used to as the doors between hallways look just like the room doors and the signs are not the best. We found ourselves taking wrong turns for the first day or so, but did get to see some of the cool architecture while trying to find our way. The elevator was an old and wooden with a single door you pulled open when the car arrived. Cool but slow. Our room was quite large by Euro standards and had a great comfy king bed. The bathroom was very large with a great soaking tub, separate shower and his/her sinks. The only faults with the bath was relatively dim lighting and no real door, only a glass panel. This was no problem for us, married 13 years, but may be awkward for a new couple getaway! The room rate did include a free mini bar/fridge which was a great touch too. Ours was always restocked daily with water, tonic, soda, wine, beer and even airline bottles of gin, rum etc. This really hit the spot after walking miles along the canals all day. If that's not enough to help you unwind, try the spa (rare in this city). It was a well thought out space, beautiful pool, a jacuzzi tub and several saunas. For those not exhausted from sight-seeing, there was a fair sized workout area too. We used it every night (open to 11 pm too!)

Although all staff members were quite friendly, some were far more helpful than others. A concierge was sometimes hard to find, just busy with other duties I suppose. One nice young woman realized that nobody had oriented us during check in and politely told us where the elevators were, how to find our room, explained the free mini-bar, gave us the spa and restaurant hours, and how to contact her for any other needs. She was a huge help!

Thank you very much for your valued feedback. Regarding the charge which was made on your credit card, please be informed that the hotel takes an authorization, by checking in. This should be cancelled and back into your account within 2 working days, however it depends on where you live. If you could inform us with your reservation information we can sort this problem out. You can contact us on; sales@amrathamsterdam.com.

Further we are pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay in Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam and you appreciated the Art-Nouveau style of the hotel. We are looking forward to welcome you back in our hotel.

The Hotel itself is located just a ten minute walk from the main railway station and minutes away from the main canal attraction.
The Hotels interior architecture is beautiful, particularly in the larger corridors and landings with marbled floors and walls and with an elegant wood framed ornate glass ceiling in the main stairway
We were in a group of three couples so had the chance to see how the rooms differed, given the unusual triangular shape of the building.
The rooms are elegant and diverse in shape and size with varying amenities. One room had a His and Her double basin but with just a bath with shower. Our room had a bath and a shower enclosure. Our room although on the same tariff as the others was bigger with a high ceiling and views over the city but it appears to be luck rather than reserve as to what type of room you get.
The rooms were clean though a little tired in some areas. Our friends room for example had a broken shower screen over the bath that required a little skill from the user to keep the water from flooding the floor- not five star. In our room the air conditioning refused to work.- not five star.
The booking does not include breakfast and at 25 Euros plus local tax is not exactly cheap but is comprehensive and convenient.
The staff were polite and attentive with the Concierge service being particularly helpful.
The basement boasts what the Hotel calls a Wellness Centre which I didn't use but a friend did.
With a Sauna, Turkish Steam Bath whirl and Swimming Pools proved to be a very pleasant experience.

All in all we all had a pleasant stay at the Grand Hotel Amrath but I personally think the five star rating is a little optimistic.

Stayed here for 2 nights midweek. Excellent check in process, shown to the room and given the history on the building and shown how to work the gadgets in the room. Lovely large room - such a comfortable bed. Lovely shower and bathroom. Amazing free mini bar. Bbc1 and 2 on tv if homesick. Very quiet rooms. Located close to the train station. All in all great stay and recommended.

I researched for days before choosing a hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we certainly we're not disappointed. Extremely nice staff. I lost my phone and our baggage was delayed. Hotel staff made so mane calls to airport and to store where I left the phone in order to help us. I want to especially thank Peter for being so nice and patient with our numerous request. As for the room, it was a very spacious room, big bathroom with a huge bathtub. Had an amazing time. One last tip, hotel is conveniently located right next to the central station. So you can take the train from the airport to central station and simply walk to hotel.
