This hotel was perfect in every way. The rooms were beautiful and spotlesslessly clean, the pillows were of several types and hypoallergenic ones were available. The bathroom was luxurious by any standard, the staff helpful but not overbearing. The spa is amazing. The only downside is that food in the hotel is very expensive and portions are tiny. That aside, it is a perfect experience we will be returning again. They are sweet to well behaved kids and make staying their special for them.

This is a fine example of an older hotel that manages to still feel luxurious, well maintained and clean!
We arrived in Amsterdam via train and walked with our suitcases from the station. It was both a quick walk and easy to find. It's close to the central tourist areas, a very good location. During check-in we couldn't fault the service, although we were a little confused at first as there is a concierge desk but you check-in in a Reception office, so that was a little bit unusual compared to other hotels.
We were taken to our room by a member of staff who thoroughly explained all the details of the room. The room itself was immaculate - beautiful wallpaper, curtains and furnishings, and a spotless modern bathroom with a heated mirror. The bed was extremely comfortable.
The rooms seemed to be serviced twice daily - once in the morning, and then again in the afternoon/evening. I believe this is called a turndown service? We hadn't stayed in a hotel that offered this is as a standard part of their rate before, so it might be something to be aware of.
The hotel has a business centre that offers free high-speed internet.
The only complaint I would have is the noise of the flagpoles! We had a room in the centre of the hotel, and you could hear the ropes that attach the flags to the flagpoles, banging against the flagpoles constantly. It wasn't a really big deal but I think the hotel would be absolutely flawless if they could find a way to stop that noise during the night.
We've stayed in some very nice hotels over the years and this is one of the best.

I've stayed at the Amrath twice now and really love it and always recommend it to my friends. It's a really unique place with much more soul than the big chains. Let me do my pros and cons:

Pros:
Awesome marble stair case in the foyer with lots of wrought iron. I love this. The building was an old shipping company and it's just really cool and unique.
Free wireless (although I couldn't get it to work last time I was there)
Free minibar. Not kidding. How cool is that?
Nespresso machine with assortment of capsules
Lanvan bath products
Great robes, slippers
BIG rooms. These people who say the rooms are small? I don't understand them. The two rooms I've had have been pretty generously sized. (And I'm American.)
Great little brown bar on the ground floor
Very close to Central Station. (this is good for me because my office is out by the Arena and there are no hotels there.)
High ceilings
Good black-out curtains that are elecontronically controlled.

Cons
Dusty. Both times I've stayed, at times, I've been overwhelmed by the smell of dust. No one else seems to mention this, so take it for what it is.
Restaurant always empty whenever I've been there

Funny
You WILL get lost here. Now I understand why they walk you to your room.

In short, this is a great place. I don't know why I'm not giving it five stars. Maybe because there's no butler service. Butler service would put it over the edge for me!

This is a fab hotel. Free mini bar, bathrobes, slippers, huge bed, great spa area with sauna and pool etc. Excellent service - staff were very attentive. Best hotel I have ever stayed in.

If you are arriving by air get the train (underneath the airport). Costs 3.80 euro and the train leaves for Amsterdam Central about 7 times an hour. The hotel is very close to the train station. Turn left when you leave the station and walk about 500 mts until you see a large traditional building with many flags on the roof.

Easy reach to all main attractions - flower market, red light area etc. Museum area about 3 km away but we walked it and caught the tram back.

Downsides - Amsterdam is very expensive for eating/drinking. Not much to do for small children - witnessed many bored toddlers in the Van Gogh musuem.
Also beware if you are taking children to this hotel - easily accessible free porn on TV!!! You have been warned!

Overall a great city break - felt like a new woman instead of a harassed mother!

Stayed for nights at the end of February. The staff at this hotel couldnt have been nicer. Everyone seemed to genuinely care not only about what we thought of the hotel, but were willing to do anything in thier power to make our stay in Amsterdam more enjoyable. Had price fix dinner in hotel one night which was delicious, but a bit pricey. The room was large by European standards and had very high ceilings, enhancing the spaciousness. The architecture of the hotel was very unique and has been better described by other reviewers. Night staff had to point us in the direction of the right elevator for several nights, but this was more our fault than anything else lol. One day we did notice that the bed had been made without sheets which was immediately resolved with one call to the front desk.
