My husband and I originally planned to stay at Kamer 01 in September 2006, but had to postpone our honeymoon unexpectedly. When we started planning the trip again a year later, we looked at all the small hotels and B&Bs in Amsterdam and again decided to stay here.
We will always be glad we did! It was truly the highlight of our trip. On our next stop in Brugge, we stayed in a beautiful room at a Small Luxury Hotel of the World hotel. However, it did not compare to our experience at Kamer 01.
Peter, Wolter, and Tommy (their adorable and sweet beagle pup) welcomed us when we arrived, and we spent a fun few hours chatting before leaving to explore the neighborhood. When we returned, we went to the Blue Room to unpack. What a room! It is huge by any standard, particularly compared to normal accomodations in Europe. It was impecably decorated, and astonishingly quiet and peaceful (the hosts ensure the room is quiet by having installed special windows, yet another thoughtful touch).
The bathroom is huge, and the tub is extra deep and long. The balcony is cozy, and they make sure you have extra blankets and pillows to use on the balcony if you wish to sit outside when the weather isn't warm.
The DVD collection was much appreciated - we enjoyed popping in a movie and relaxing with some chocolates and wine from downstairs after a nice meal out. You truly have access to juice, water, coffee, beer, and wine 24/7 included with your stay, which is such a nice touch. Also, having internet and computer in the room was awesome. Hotels charge you for all these special extras, but Peter and Wolter make sure everything is included in the price of your room. At the other hotel we stayed at (which was very nice - don't get me wrong!) having two beers, a movie, a snack, and internet in an evening would have cost about 40 euros just to give you an idea!
The breakfasts were great - and Peter and Wolter were so accomodating about the time. I had a tough time with jet lag the first day, and they saved our breakfast for us until 1:30 in the afternoon.
They had great suggestions about restaurants and sights to see. More than being good hosts in that regard, though, they were delightful people to chat with during breakfast and in the afternoon before dinner. Not pushy or prying, they always let us set the pace - if we wanted to ask a quick question and head upstairs, fine. If we wanted to stay and talk about anything, that's good too.
I was a little worried about the comfort of the round bed before we got there, but there was no reason to be worried! It was so comfortable. We really liked it!
We love Amsterdam and will return hopefully within a few years. We absolutely will stay at Kamer 01 again. We have stayed at Small Luxury hotels, Four Seasons properties, and honestly liked this much better. Thank you, Peter and Wolter, for a wonderful stay.
