“A small friendly hotel in traditional Amsterdam building”
Reviewed 26 March 2013

We got a friendly welcome and had fun climbing flights of narrow, winding stairs. A nice big room, clean and warm, with fridge, kettle, tea and coffee and a great big bed. Good breakfasts with toast, cheese etc. The hotel is in a great location, near the tram but away from noise and easy to walk everywhere. Would stay there again if visiting Amsterdam.

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor at the back, nice and quiet but the staircases need care

The Golden Bear Hotel is in a charming old Amsterdam building with steep stairs that turn as you go up, no elevator. The rooms are nicely furnished and clean with comfortable bed. The heat works well. Some rooms have ensuite baths while others share toilet/shower in hallway. I don't mind sharing since the facilities are clean and the price is always right. If you book on the web in advance you can get a single without private shower/toilet for about $70.
The staff is very friendly and serve a great included continental breakfast every morning with eggs on the weekend.
From Central Station take the 1, 2 or 5 tram to get you here in about 15 mins. The area is good because you have a lot of stores, restaurants, bars and clubs in the neighborhood. It's 2 mins walk to Leidseplein, a big Square with bars, restaurants, banks, the Bulldog Coffee shop, and also not too far from Vondelpark. The best thing about the location though is the nearby nightlife. Spijker Bar and Church are practically across the street and the gay area with more clubs and bars is just a few blocks/canals further down. Dolphin coffee shop is downstairs and a Portuguese restaurant is next door. The tram stop is a minute walk away.

The Golden Bear is in a very good. convenient location, situated moments away from a good shopping street and 3 tram lines and within walking distance of many sights, although it is discretely sited up a quiet side road.

We stay here whenever we visit Amsterdam as we know we will get a clean and comfortable stay. The staff are friendly and pretty much everything you need for a short break is there.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Although a long way up the steep stairs, we have found that the quietest rooms are at the top and/or...

This hotel i very well located, close to transport, 7 minutes from Dam square with the tram and in an area with nice restaurants and shops. Rooms were clean, warm and enough big. Nice breakfast with a very happy and funny receptionist.
