We stayed here for fri and sat night. On arrival we were met by David, the receptionist who was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The reception area was lovely and bright and had obviously been updated compared with the other area of the hotel that we stayed. Our room was on the top top floor, up a very steep staircase - it was quite the experience. When booking, it was advertised as being deluxe/wifi/flat screen but we didn't have any. Although we were happy, we had expected it to be more modern for the price we payed.
We found the hotel quiet and comfortable, it's in an excellent location and close to tram lines. If the rooms were updated it would be a top place to stay!

Room Tip: Choose deluxe but expect a hike

The hotel is a building site with work starting at 7am- dusty and very noisy. Staff were unapologetic about this. Breakfast was meager. In fairness the room itself was good. I Imagine the hotel will be good when finished but for now, not worth the money.

This hotel is just what we needed -- clean, comfortable and centrally located. There was some initial confusion as to our reservation, but after some intense discussion all was cleared up and the staff was friendly and willing to help the entire time. This hotel is seconds from Leidseplein as well as the 1, 2, and 5 tram lines. Very bustling part of town, which was very nice. Within walking distance of almost everything!
If you're planning on taking advantage of the breakfast at this place, I would advise you to find something cheaper and better somewhere else. For ten euros each, they have a smattering of bread and jam and cold cuts. If you're in dire need of food, this will do just fine, but if you have the time to go somewhere else, it would be recommended.
Last but not least, this hotel is under intense construction. Floors and walls are being taken down or being recarpeted, so just be aware that the already slightly cramped hotel is even more so.
Overall good, would stay again!

I recently stayed at the Golden Bear march 27/31st 2014. This hotel is now part of the Chiltern hotel group.I have stayed at this hotel over the years since it was called the Unique. My comments and markings reflect my experiences at this hotel during my stay. The hotel was in the troughs of major refurbishment which necessitated guests having to go through building works to get to their allocated rooms.I have no complaints about the staff as they have to work under these conditions on a day to day basis. My bone on contention is this,The new owners deemed fit to run the hotel as a going concern, building works included.Iwould have thought they should have closed the hotel for the period to take account of the works.By keeping it open during the works would be in contravention of UK health and safety laws.I would assume the dutch authorities have the same type of laws.I would strongly suggest that if anybody has booked this hotel to check with the hotel first before departure. The building works is to continue for at least two more weeks. That is why I have given this hotel a poor rating. The owners please note.

Lots of confusion upon arrival regarding number of room keys we could have/availability of safety deposit boxes/whether an advertised kettle was available (it wasn't) as hotel was undergoing building works which we had not been informed of (some banging/mess during the day but luckily we were out most of the time). Information from different members of staff quite confused and contradictory, however they were polite and friendly. Card keys to rooms stopped working a few times so there was some slight anxiety about gaining entry back into room at night as hotel had no 24 hour reception. On the plus side the hotel is well priced, very central and easy to find from Dam Square (just follow the tram lines). Room spacious and clean. Just a shame that with the building works going the hotel didn't go the extra mile with regards to customer care to compensate for the inconvenience.

First of all i must start by thanking the guys for lovely warm welcome and their vast knowledge. The location of this Hotel in the centre was perfect.

For an Amsterdam City Centre Hotel the rates where very reasonable and our room was spotless. We had a deluxe double which was nicely sized and the added fridge was a bonus.

Yes there are quite a lot of steep stairs but this Amsterdam!!!! Stairs are the norm!!!!

Thank you very much for our stay - we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we will be seeing you again at the beginning of June!!! Sam + Karl (Room 17 07-10/03/2014)
