“Amazing stay on a houseboat!”
Reviewed 27 September 2011

My husband and I rented a houseboat (#10) from Frederic for 3 nights and we couldn't have been happier. We were warmly greeted by Marjolyn who gave us an amazingly detailed personalized map of attractions. The houseboat itself surpassed expectations - better in person than in pictures on the website. The boat was clean and equipped with everything we needed. The boat was in a fantastic location right across from Anne Frank house and within walking distance of every major attraction. We also rented bikes, and were kindly given a discount when we couldn't figure out how to turn on the heat in the boat (all taken care of). Forget hotels, rent a houseboat and bicycle from Frederic if you want a really amazing experience in Amsterdam!

Room Tip: Houseboat #10 was in a great location though If you are a light sleeper, the church bells (chiming e...

We stayed at the Prinszicht apartment for six nights and seven days. There was everything that we needed and more: Chocolates, Olive Oil, every comfort was thoughtfully provided. The apartment was located close enough to walk to all the attractions, or if you prefer near to transportation and yet situated in a quiet neighborhood. What a joy to wake up in such a spacious apartment and look out to a front view of the beautiful canal and trees! What a fun city, parks and markets alive with such nice people, we had so much fun on the bikes too, what a different way of life. The apartment has everything you need, living room, tele, full kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom and even a washing machine. The best thing is that the building has an elevator! The Frederic family (yes they welcomed us) and staff were great, very friendly and supportive. My daughter arrived a day before I did and Marne kept his word to me (I had emailed him and asked for assistance) and helped her get settled in the apartment. The only thing that happened was that the electricity went out one morning (due to rains?) and we reported this to Frederics and by the time we returned the lights were working and door locks had been changed to ensure our safety, although the area is quite safe, it was a precaution and as a mother I really appreciated the concern of our hosts. I am recommending these wonderful people to everyone and look forward to definitely going back there as soon as possible! BTW - I Amsterdam!!!

We just returned to the states from a trip to Amsterdam and Bruges and our Amsterdam experience was truly made great by Marne and Julien at Fredric Rent a Bike. We rented two different apartments from them on the Brouwersgracht canal in the same block as their rental shop. The location couldn't be better - only a block from a very nice local commercial street with a foodmarket, cheese and bread shop, wine shop, lovely cafes, the bank, yet the Brouwersgracht is residential and relatively quiet. We could walk almost everyplace but only had to walk a few blocks to catch a trolley when necessary. The first apartment were had was on the first two floors and the second one (after the trip to Bruges) was on the top two floors of another building across the canal, each had its own charms and individual style. Marne (son of Fredric) and Julien were alway very helpful with recommendations on restaurants and cafes and made reservations for us when needed (our cell phones didn't work in Europe). I heartily recommend Fredric Rent a Bike to any Amsterdam traveler who would like to have a great local experience in a terrific neighborhood....can't wait to go back myself!

We stayed at the Prinszicht apartment for two nights and three days. It was great, very spacious and quite stylish. I really loved it and so did the girls I was with. It was Pride weekend and the city had a great vibe but it was so crowded! It was good that the apartment was a bit off the beaten path. It was a bit of a pain to walk there after a long day of sightseeing but if you don't mind walking it will be great. It has great views of the canal too! It has everything you need, living room, tele, kitchen two bed rooms, bathroom and even a washing machine.
The Fredric staff was great, very friendly and supportive. Though at the end of the trip they questioned us about a sheet they could not find which was under one of the covers. I would definitely go back there!

Room Tip: Quiet area, great space!

I always stay at Frederic's when I visit Amsterdam. The budget priced rooms for singles and couples are the best value I've found there. It's friendly, quiet and, and although not in the centre of town, shopping's no problem. Staff all very helpful. Lots of different types of accommodation too, including houseboats, though I've not stayed on one of them. Worth checking out if you're trying to keep the spending down.

Room Tip: Worth booking well in advance.

We stayed six nights which included the Queen's Day festivities. The location was fantastic. The houseboat is in the Jordaan area where the Prisengracht meets Bloemgracht. You could see the Anne Frank huis and hear the Westerkerk bells from the houseboat. The kitchen had the items needed to prepare your own meals. There is a refrigerator, electric oven, dishwasher, coffee maker and an electric tea kettle as well. The windows opened by the kitchen table which provided terrific views of the neighbourhood and the boats going by. The bed and bath tub are both raised but stepping stools are provided. The houseboat has a sofa and digital T.V. A big plus for us was the washer and dryer. Frederic and Marjolijn are helpful and friendly and we would recommend them to anyone looking for accommodations or bike rentals in Amsterdam.

The terrace which we had seen in the internet was super dirty (abandoned) and the closets where we were supposed to put our clothes were very dusty. We wanted to put the heating on when we arrived at night (22'30h) and it wasnt working anymore and so we had to freeze for as while. Then the side bed lamp fell upside down, the flowers of the toilet were already getting rotten and there wasnt even soap for the hands. There is a table but its in the toilet, if you want to have a tea you have to go to the toilet, which is also not so nice. To open the door of the toilet you have to make such a big effort and your hands can get trapped. The final and biggest surprise was going to sleep and realising that the big bewas in reality two beds together (fair enough) and that it was so old, that you were sleeping on wires. The next morning we were in pain. Moreover, the room has a door which connects to a family house, so you can hear them speaking, having dinner, laughing.. the whole experience was negative, except that there is a big bath tube (bring your own soap) and that the location is wonderful.

When we complaint (apparently too late, just because we didnt want to be with this issue 24h and we gave an opportunity to check if at least the sleeping was good), then she didnt want to come to the room to check the things which we were talking about, she just sits behind the computer all the time. She was nice until we made the complaint, then she wasnt professional at all. She said that they never had a complaint and that we should check other hotels in the area to see the prices. At this point we realised that they they got overconfident with the past reviews and lately didnt take so much care of the rooms. We wanted a refund and they refused, giving us back only 15%, saying that we complaint too late. But how could we know that the bed was going to be that bad before sleeping?

We wanted to try sth new cause we always go for the cheapest options, but believe me, I've been to better (and much cheaper) hostels which take care of the little details, and they even give you breakfast!

Stay away!

Since 1977 we are working in tourism. Since 1990 we started the guest room services beside our bike rental. Every year we are receiving around 5000 guest from all over the world, and we are always able to provide our guests a pleasant stay with fine accommodation, and personal information on restaurants , art, night life, history, nature, bike tracks etc.
as you can see reading the other comments on Tripadvisor / Rick Steve / Guide du Routard / Lonely planet./ Lets go forums. We are very sorry for Anna F. that we were unable to make her stay in Amsterdam, a happy one, however we did our utmost as usually.
We took direct action on the complaints, some leaves in the yard and a bit of dust in one of the cabinets of the canal house that was build in 1730. We replaced the bed afterwards. And we where very surprised with the refund request of the total stay when she checked out after a few days.
