“Visit just for the fun of it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2014

The place may not appeal to everybody but is definitely a creative and innovative museum and fortunately it is not that large so in barely an hour or so you will be through with the whole collection. The place as the name suggests is devoted to different types of bags and purses and that too in a whole lot of shape and sizes. I also loved some of the creative hand fans on display.

“Fantastic Collection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

This place is an antique collector's dream. In addition to purses and bags, the museum collection includes necessaires, old pockets, chatelaines, early wallets, snuff boxes, etc. The displays are thoughtful and beautifully done, with lots of historical background. Bravo to curator Sigrid Ivo!

“Spectacular museum tucked away in brilliant location.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

Amsterdam has many fine museums but this little jewel tops the crown. Not feeling like the crowds and lines at Anne Frank House and Van Gough Museum, I spent a good amount of time in this place. It is located in one of the most exclusive areas of town which makes getting there so pleasant. And the original historical canal house it is housed in has been restored with the utmost attention to detail. The painted ceilings of the period rooms are almost reason enough to visit.

The collection itself is jaw-dropping. The thought of thousands of purses may not pique the interest of all. But these treasures are the finest examples of beadwork, stitchery, and other examples of the finest craftsmanship of the past. The present is not ignored; in fact one of my favorite displays was of a pair of winged Prada pumps with matching handbag.

The museum creators have also done an exemplary job of peripheral offerings, such as an utterly delightful cafe with unique and divine menu, presentation, and setting. The museum shop is filled with unusual and will-priced souvenirs, rare bags, and hard-to-find books.

Don't miss the charming garden in the back with its hidden treasures.

“Historical Bags”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

The Tassenmuseum is a beautifully arranged and comprehensive history of bags, purses, and other items dating from the mid 1500's to current. It is located on the canal in a converted home that dates to the 1600's. How cool is that! The building also houses a small restaurant, the food we had was creative and delicious. Do not miss a WC visit on the 2nd floor, where each of the stalls has a purse behind glass on the wall. The gift shop has some great cards and contemporary purses for sale, along with many gift items. There are period rooms, and it's a fun building to explore - with much to admire and appreciate. Especially the bags! They have a fabulous collection, with bags and purses I've never seen before. It is hard to imagine the hand work and amount of time that went into making some of the bags, hundreds of years ago. The museum also presents exhibitions with specific themes. The knowledge of purses and bags housed by this museum is extensive. Amazing to me is the attention to detail that resonates throughout the entire building. The museum is not to be missed if you are in Amsterdam.
