Kaiko - he whispered it softy. So softly that we could not understand it first time around. Kaiko! The Japanese expat looked at us like he just shared a forbidden fruit upon our question for the best (apart from the Okura) Japanese place in Amsterdam. So there we were yesterday night. Amsterdam was wearing it's summer coat: hot and humid. With sticky shirts (and fingers) we entered what appeared to be a normal house and turned out to be our favorite Japanese in Amsterdam as of yesterday (oh, that is if you don't count in the Okura...). Five tables, a small bar surrounding the chef (room for 6 more guests) and the (good) smell of Japan coming right of the wet towel. Some Kirin and Asahi down the road we concluded that the fish was fresh and full of texture, the sushi was crisp and the rice a magical luke warm and the rolls were crisp as a spring morning on the countryside. Do I recommend Kaiko? Mmmmm, can't say I don't......

You need to book, the place is small, and it's popular for a reason. I tried this on recommendation of a Japanese colleague as the best sushi, and I agree. I've been to Japan often enough to know what bad sushi is, and this is good.

Excellent menu choice, and the chef is Japanese and it's sushi, so some of the other menu items are not his specialty, so remember that the reason to go here is for sushi.

Sitting at the bar gives a view of the chef at work, and that's an interesting experience to watch, and get some entertainment.

The cook is Japanese and so are many of the customers. The cook has his own style of presenting the sushi, unusual but interesting. However, when we were there the fish was too cold and the cook had used too much wasabi, to the point where we almost couldn`t taste the fish. That was a bit disappointing. The side dishes were good though.

kaiko is very tiny japanese place in town and one the favourites from the japanese community. The three of us sat at the counter and we had our sushi and sashimi prepared right in front of us. The food esperience was great, real fresh, tasty fish with the entertainment of the cook right in front of us. We had some mixed sushi -the california roll is super-, a fantastic tempura, light and crunchy, right out of the frying pan. The service is great, they really look after you without being intrusive. It's a real great food experience

I have lived in Amsterdam for seven years and tried them all.
Food is perfect. Selected daily by the owner. His wife and daughter run the restaurant.
Best seats are the sushi bar. The restaurant is very basic but beats Nobu or Zuma in London on quality. Very hard to get in as the restaurant is very small.
