We had diner with another couple. The restaurant is very formal and classical. The food is excellent and the wines coming with it too. We had a 6 course surprise menu and a wine arrangement with it. We asked for dishes favouring red wine and were treated with 2 fish - white wine , 2 meat -red wine, chees - port and desert -sweet wine. Surprisingly, the sommelier poured as the first red a Barolo, the second wine was even stronger (a new world syrah). Some of the dishes were partly prepared at the table, adding to the experience. The sommelier was very knowledged on the wines he poured. The cheeses deserve a seperate mention, a very large collection of very well matured cheeses, including some locals and the finest from france.

The down side: price. The wine arrangement was more expensive than the whole bill in most restaurants.

We went last week on Friday. Service started a bit chaotic (they took a bit long to bring our aperitifs and they brought 4 amouse bouches in a time span of 3-4 minutes, which gave a weird felling of "being in a hurry"). Luckily they improved the level along the evening (they regularly filled the glass and the rythm of the evening got into a nice slow pace). We had their 7-course degustation menu. At 112 EUR, considering the location, level of the food and service we found it good value.

Nice selection of Champagnes, with some big names but some interesting lesser known houses. The cheese selection was one of the best two I've ever had. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable about each and every cheese, as it should be.

Should they polish a bit the service aspect (which was very good but not excellent), this place would easily deserve 5 stars.

All in all, a well-deserved 1 star Michelin we were happy to visit.

The Amstel is Amsterdams grandest hotel and although the setting and decor at La Rive would live up to that image unfortunately the food doestn't. If I were to describe the food of this 1 star restaurant I would say it's lazy. The chef needs to execute his dishes with more flare and less mistakes. I would be suprised if it kept its star if it continues down this road.

I dined at La Rive recently and was very impressed.
I am no stranger to top Michelin restaurants and though this one has but a single star I enjoyed it more than some restaurants with two or even three. Firstly, the setting overlooking the Amstel river was delightful with tugboats and rowing skiffs gliding by a short distance from my table provided free entertainment and an unambiguous sense of place.
I dined alone and chose the seven course tasting menu with wine accompaniment. The food was nothing short of superb. Everything was cooked to perfection and combined whimsy and flavours from around the globe. The lobster simply melted in my mouth as did the rabbit. The cuisine was very studied and carefully prepared and served at a perfect tempo. The wines were expertly chosen by a very knowledgeable sommelier who combined a sense of fun and careful research.
The staff were all extremely attentive but not hurried and made me feel welcome and appreciated.
If you have an opportunity to dine here, do not hesitate. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.
Cheers!

La Rive, situated on the river Amstel in the prestigious Amstel Hotel, for me is the best restaurant in Amsterdam, and top10 in the world.

Everything here is perfect: location (what a view), staff (courteous but friendly, extremely knowledgable), the ambiance, the (selection of) food, the wine.

If it were not so expensive (but worth every cent) I would go more often. Now, once a year is the target.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! A complete experience and a total spoil...
