Description: “Haesje Claes” is a restaurant situated in the historical center of Amsterdam, between the Spui and the Dam square, across from the Amsterdam Museum. The restaurant occupies six, epic buildings, in which the original architectural features such as little steps, corridors and hallways all have been preserved. Likewise, the exterior of the building is a beautiful example of traditional Dutch architecture. All chambers are breathing a century old ambiance, perfectly suited for a comfortable and casual lunch or dinner. The name Haesje Claes originates from the Lady Haesje Claes, who was born in 1520, and was a daughter of a rich salesman. She was also the founder of the “Burgerweeshuis” (orphanage) formerly located in the Amsterdam Museum. The interior is comprised of paintings depicting scenes from the orphanage and many paintings and tiles in the restaurant date back to this time period. Our kitchen is open daily from 12:00 till 22:00

Restaurant was recommended by the concierge at Movenpick when we asked for a good place for local food. A long, but manageable walk from the hotel. Our waitress was excellent, helping us with the menu, chatting about our good news (we were celebrating the birth of a new grandson) and making us feel at home. Food was excellent (I stuck with fish - pickled herring and sole, my wife had pate and pork). Presentation was good, Portions were generous. We were (slightly) disappointed that we were too full to have dessert. We saw the lemon pie and it looked very good. Make sure you make a reservation. We did and were glad. We saw people being turned away. We had a half bottle of bubbly and a glass of wine each, and the tab was just under 100 euros.

Sat at a table outside on Spuistraat on a very hot and humid evening.

Excellent food and very good service.

We spent 4 days in Amsterdam prior to our Baltic cruise. Amsterdam was unseasonably warm and as we walked back to our hotel mid afternoon from the museum we decided to stop and get something to drink. This restaurant was right in front of us so in we went. What a wonderful surprise. We ended up eating a bunch of appetizers such as herring, oysters, caviar and some wine. Delightful.

This is a old style Dutch restaurant with good food and warm ambiance. Our server was very attentive and sweet. We had pea soup, a Dutch sampler and creme Boulet? It was enough along with a beer to keep us happy. They have good bread with the meal too.

Staying in Amsterdam for 3 days, constant rain and an indifferent hotel, this restaurant was a real find. It is busy, popular with groups of Americans in the evenings but also well-known to locals. The atmosphere is dark wood, tapestries and opulent like you imagine traditional Dutch. The food was excellent, freshly cooked and good size portions. The service was wonderful. We hadn't booked the first night but they eventually found us a table. The next evening they remembered our names; the following night we were greeted like old friends by several of the staff. Prices are reasonable and there is a 3-course special for 23 euros.
