Description: Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter. Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere. Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Walked in off the street to this small restaurant in Amsterdam..after a long day of travel. Immediately greeted and seated by Demetria the upbeat and welcoming host. Bolinda, our waitress, verbally shared the menu and from there forward it was a great evening. The food was fresh and delicious and Demetria and Bolinda made the evening as they shared the history of the restaurant and the chef. This is a must visit restaurant when in Amsterdam.

We arrived here at 9pm on a Sunday night, and it was full of people having a late night dinner. We were lucky to get a table. Those that arrived after us had a drink at the bar before a table was made available. It is a small, cosy, dark and compact restaurant and had the feeling of it being used regularly by locals, even though it is only a few steps from the main square. The ambiance made us relax and take our time here.

I was thrilled to see the resident cat have a stroll around and go out the front door for some fresh air. He doesn't bother or disturb the diners - in fact, he likes to ignore everyone, so don't expect a fuss!

The waitress told us the food that was available that night (there were no menus) which made it feel very personal and easy for us to ask questions about what comes with the food etc... I like the way she said 'I have a....' it felt like we were at her house for dinner instead of a restaurant. She also crouched down to talk to us at eye level which was nice.

I had the clams to start with and the fish with lentils for mains. The fish was so nice and meaty that I wish I could have it all over again! The steak was served with a side salad and chips which were beautifully presented in little terracotta pots. It is only when we left the restaurant that we realised we didn't know the cost of the food when we ordered, we were too excited to hear the menu! But then again, at least we both had EXACTLY what we wanted, rather then opting for a cheaper meal - just because it was cheap!

I had the house white wine with the food, which was lovely (aka, strong!). We came as a couple, just after becoming engaged earlier that day and had a lovely, romantic, and cosy evening. I hope to come back again soon, maybe even as an annual trip :)

This is located in Nes Straat, a little theatre street just off the Dam, at the corner nearest to the big obelisk memorial near the Krasnopolsky hotel.

It is not to be missed. The waiter will give you a verbal menu, with great choices for first and second courses and desserts. The restaurant is run by two lovely sisters, who are pleasant. Beyond belief. The quality of the food is outstanding, and the service is surprisingly good, given that the restaurant is always crowded. We needed to eat fairly quickly, as we were going to a concert, and the sister who served us made a special effort to make sure we got away on time.

As for the food, it is difficult to praise it too highly. I had the steak with goat cheese and strawberry sauce on both occasions I went there, while my wife had salmon both times. It is not often that one goes back for the same dish and finds it even better the second time, which is what happened to us. The first courses and desserts were also extraordinary; I will long remember the broccoli soup, while my wife scored a Dutch yoghurt dish and a pear tart to die for.

My highest plaudits to the van Kerkwijk sisters!

Following recommendations on TripAdvisor we arrived soon after 6.30 and although the restaurant was busy a table was found for us almost straightaway. We had the menu explained to us verbally and when the food came it was delicious! A great experience and not too expensive.

What a great little place! We had missed lunch so went for an early evening meal at 6.00pm.
Concentration is needed to take in the menu as it is explained to you. (no paper menus)
The food was really good, interesting flavours and textures.
The staff were friendly and efficient.
House wine good.
We enjoyed our meal and would recommend this restaurant.
